Team Effort Guides Lehigh To 12-2 Win Over Cairn

4/24/2024 7:12:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball returned to J. David Walker Field on Wednesday afternoon after a week away from their home field. The Mountain Hawks played host to the visiting Cairn Highlanders and earned a 12-2 victory in nine innings.

"Golier gave us a good start and Lucas Rich gave us a strong finish on the mound," said head coach Sean Leary. "It was good to see all nine starters contribute today. Now it's time to turn our focus to this pivotal Patriot League series."

Grady Golier started on the mound for Lehigh (20-19-1, 6-12 PL), tossing 2.0 while allowing no runs with three strikeouts. The loss was credited to Cairn (23-13) starter Ronaldinho Alcin after he allowed seven runs to come across the plate in the second inning.

The game got off to a quick start after both the Mountain Hawks and Highlanders were retired in order in the first inning. Golier again kept Cairn off the board in the top of the second, which made way for a massive bottom of the frame for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks plated seven runs in the inning, five of which came from bases-loaded walks. A Jake Whitlinger RBI single and a Rafe Perich sac-fly provided the two other runs for Lehigh in the second.

Following the second inning, the Mountain Hawks began rotating relief pitchers on the mound, with six in total entering the game after Golier. The Highlanders were able to respond following Lehigh's big second inning in the top of the third, as a Zach Bauers double to left center plated two runs for Cairn. However, Lehigh would wipe those away in their next at bat, as two runs crossed home plate from a Tyler Young sac-fly and Justin Butler RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Leading 9-2, Lehigh's pitching staff kept the Highlanders at bay while the Mountain Hawk offense continued to flourish. Raffaele Rogers added an additional run courtesy of an RBI single in the fifth, setting the score at 10-2. A Young single in the sixth plated two more runs for the Mountain Hawks, and Lehigh held a ten-run lead through six innings.

Although play could've been stopped at the conclusion of the top of the seventh due to mercy rule, the Highlanders decided to continue the game. However, neither team was able to get any runs across the board in the final two innings, ending the game with the score 12-2 in favor of the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh returns to Patriot League play this upcoming weekend for a three-game series against Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks will host the Crusaders at 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
