Young Fires Second Career No-Hitter As Lehigh Blanks Rival Lafayette Twice
4/20/2024 5:02:00 PM | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh's pitching stayed hot with 14 more shutout innings and the Mountain Hawks used one big offensive inning in each game to sweep a doubleheader from Lafayette Saturday at Leadership Park in the Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
Senior Katelyn Young threw her second career no-hitter as Lehigh took game one 5-0 and then sophomore Chloe Hess and junior Maria Urban combined on a five-hitter as the Mountain Hawks captured the nightcap by an identical 5-0 score.
Lehigh's two graduate students had big days offensively, with Josie Charles going 5-for-5 with two walks over seven plate appearances and Emily Cimino belting a three-run home run in game one and adding an RBI single in game two.
The Lehigh pitching staff has now thrown 22 consecutive scoreless innings as the Mountain Hawks extend their winning streak to 15 straight games. Lehigh is now 25-14 overall and 11-0 in the Patriot League.
Young (14-7) threw her second career no-hitter and fired a complete-game shutout for the fourth consecutive weekend. She no-hit Monmouth on March 22 of last year. On Saturday, Young faced one batter over the minimum with seven strikeouts against one walk. The only blemish on the day was a one out walk issued to Kaya Ciccone-Cozart in the fourth inning. The no-hitter was aided by several outstanding defensive plays, including two from first-year Holly Lovett at third base. Lovett made a diving stop at the line and then threw out Olivia Catalina in the third and then made a diving grab on Bailey Langford's popup on the left side of the infield for the final out of the game.
Offensively, Lehigh broke through in the third inning when Cimino went the other way for her third home run of the year with a three-run shot to left. Junior Julia Mrochko later added an RBI single in a four-run frame. The Mountain Hawks added a run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Brooke Cannon.
Lehigh had 10 hits in the opener with Charles, Mrochko and first-year Gracie Smith all recording two.
Megan Coyle picked up Lafayette's first hit of the day with one out in the first inning of game two. Coyle had three of the Leopards five hits but Hess and Urban successfully kept the Leopards off the scoreboard.
Cimino opened a three-run first inning with an RBI single and Lovett later added a two-run double to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead. Consecutive two-out doubles by Charles and Smith put Lehigh up 4-0 in the second inning and the Mountain Hawks scored their fifth run in the fourth inning when Charles tripled to left, scoring first-year Peyton Sward.
Hess was strong in the circle with five scoreless innings allowing four hits with no walks and striking out eight. Urban added two scoreless innings with a hit allowed plus a walk and a strikeout.
Charles had three of Lehigh's eight hits in the nightcap.
Lehigh and Lafayette will wrap up their series with a single game Sunday beginning at noon. The Mountain Hawks will honor their senior class prior to first pitch.
