Lehigh Holds On in 9-8 Win Over Bucknell

3/23/2024 6:57:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's lacrosse narrowly escaped Bucknell 9-8 Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior midfielder Quinn Armstrong scored the game-winning goal with 2:47 remaining, and while it looked like Lehigh was going to be able to hold the ball, the Bison capitalized off of a turnover from Lehigh to bring things within one with 33 seconds remaining.

"Any Patriot League game is going to be a dogfight," said head coach Will Scudder. "All the credit to Bucknell and their coaching staff, they are a very talented team, and they came to play today. We talked about winning each quarter, and we didn't win a quarter until the third one. I was proud of the effort in the middle of the field."

Right after Bucknell scored to bring things within one, junior faceoff specialist Sean Dow won the biggest faceoff of the day to secure the win for Lehigh as he immediately passed it to Armstrong, who just ran away with the ball until time expired. Dow had a career-high performance at the stripe, going 15-of-21 with 10 ground balls. The Bison won 6-of-21 attempts at the faceoff "x."

"Sean is a guy who hadn't hoped to do what he did when he set out the season, and I thought today was awesome," Scudder said. "He stayed the course, and he's a microcosm of what this team is. Things haven't always bounced our way, and I thought he put it together today."

With the win on Saturday, Lehigh improved to 4-4 (2-1 PL), and Bucknell dropped to 2-7 (1-3 PL). Saturday's game was back and forth, with six ties and neither team holding a multiple goal lead more than once.

Six different players recorded goals for the Mountain Hawks. Brian Mullen (2G) and Armstrong each scored two goals apiece. Freddie Amato (1G, 1A), Scott Cole (1G, 2A), Tyler Lahey (1G) and Luke McAuliffe (1G) also recorded one goal apiece. Andrew Kelly finished with a team-high two assists.

Mullen got Lehigh on the board eight minutes into the game, and Bucknell scored three unanswered goals to go up by two with 11:32 remaining in the second half, but that would be the largest lead of the game for the Bison. Hans Huber scored with eight seconds left in the second quarter to help put the Bison up 6-5 heading into the second half.

Lehigh scored the first two goals of the second half and would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

While Lehigh won the faceoff battle on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks were outshot 36-35 on Saturday after committing a game-high of 18 turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Pecora tallied 10 saves on Saturday. Pecora has recorded double digit saves in every game this season. Jaz Zanelli made his first start this season in net for the Bison, finishing with six saves.

Michael Meyer, Hans Huber and Connor Davis all finished with two goals apiece to lead the way for Bucknell.

Next up, the Mountain Hawks travel to Baltimore to face Loyola on Friday at 7 p.m.
