UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Trailing 3-0 after three innings, the Lehigh softball team scored the next 11 runs to defeat Cornell 11-5 Saturday in the second of two games at the Penn State Softball Invitational at Beard Field. Junior Rory Dudley's two-run double in the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and sparked an eight-run inning for the Mountain Hawks.
Â
Dudley went 3-for-5 with three RBIs against the Big Red, while graduate student Emily Cimino also went 3-for-5 with a run batted in.
Â
Earlier Saturday, Lehigh dropped a 14-4 five-inning final to Binghamton. The Mountain Hawks are now 9-13 on the season with one more game left at the Penn State Invitational.
Â
Cornell (2-10) went up in the third on a two-run home run by Emma Antich and a sacrifice fly by Lilly Travieso.
Â
Lehigh battled back, scoring a run in the fourth when senior Amanda Greaney singled home Dudley, and then two in the fifth as senior Brooke Cannon doubled home Cimino and Dudley scored Cannon with a single.
Â
Senior Katelyn Young came on in relief in the circle to keep Cornell off the board in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Â
Cimino and Cannon opened the seventh inning with hits before Dudley doubled down the left field line, scoring both to give Lehigh a 5-3 lead. Two batters later first-year Holly Lovett doubled to right center, scoring Dudley.
Â
Lehigh scored a seventh run when first-year Gracie Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Graduate student Josie Charles then cleared the bases with a triple to right center and Cimino followed with a double to score Charles and put Lehigh up 11-3.
Â
Sydney Stapf hit a two-run home run for Cornell in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Young earned the win in relief, her fifth of the season, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings. She struck out two and walked one.
Â
First-year Maddy Clark made her first career start in the circle and allowed three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings with three walks and a strikeout. Junior Maria Urban allowed a hit in 1.2 scoreless innings between Clark and Young.
Â
Lovett and Cannon also had multi-hit games against Cornell as Lehigh out-hit the Big Red 13-9.
Â
Lehigh's first game Saturday saw the Mountain Hawks climb out of an early 4-0 hole to tie the game a 4-4 before Binghamton scored two in the fourth and eight in the fifth to claim the victory.
Â
Binghamton (12-7) scored a run in the first on Brianna Roberts' RBI double and three more in the second, keyed by Maddy Dodig's two run home run.
Â
Charles came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third and singled to right, bringing home one run and then a second, following a Binghamton error. Lehigh plated two more runs when Smith scored on a passed ball and then Charles came around to score from second on a throwing error.
Â
The Bearcats went ahead on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Allison L'Amoreaux and then a single by Roberts and broke the game open with eight runs in the fifth.
Â
Binghamton recorded 16 hits, with Roberts going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Brianna Santos and Bella Farina both adding three hits while scoring two runs.
