Mountain Hawks To Close Out Spring Break At Penn State Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Back from a successful trip to California to open spring break, Lehigh will close out spring break with six games spread over four days at the Penn State Softball Invitational, beginning Thursday in University Park, Pa.

Lehigh will open the tournament Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against host Penn State. On Friday, the Mountain Hawks will face Canisius (11 a.m.) and then will play a second game against the Nittany Lions (4 p.m.). Saturday's slate features two games against foes from New York as Lehigh will face Binghamton at 11 a.m. and Cornell at 1:30 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday at 10 a.m. with a rematch against Canisius.

All six of Lehigh's games will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).

The Mountain Hawks went 4-1 at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II, going 2-1 against Utah Tech and 2-0 against host UC Santa Barbara to move to 7-10 on the season. Lehigh has won five of its last six games overall.

Offensively, four Mountain Hawks had at least six hits and three runs scored last weekend in California. Graduate students Emily Cimino and Josie Charles both had seven hits, with Cimino adding two doubles, a home run, and five runs scored. Junior Rory Dudley had six hits, including two doubles, three RBIs and five runs scored, while senior Brooke Cannon also had six hits, four runs scored and four RBIs.

Cimino, Cannon and first-year Holly Lovett all homered for Lehigh's first three home runs of the season.

Senior Katelyn Young led Lehigh in the pitcher's circle, going 2-0 with a save and a 2.19 ERA over 16 innings. Lehigh also got five innings of one-run ball from junior Maria Urban against UC Santa Barbara and a five-inning one-hit shutout from sophomore Chloe Hess against Utah Tech.

First-year Peyton Sward continues to lead Lehigh with a .390 batting average. Charles has a team-leading 19 hits, Cimino has five doubles to lead the squad, while Cannon has scored a team-high 11 runs and is tied with sophomore Sydney Parlett for the team lead in RBIs with eight.

Young owns a 4-4 record and 3.91 ERA over 48.1 innings, while Urban has two wins and a team-best 2.81 ERA.

Penn State (15-6) started the season 15-1 before dropping its last five games. The Nittany Lions wrapped up spring break with losses to Texas and Baylor and then three setbacks at Texas State. This weekend's
Games will mark the first-ever meetings between Lehigh and Penn State in softball.

Defending MAAC regular season champion Canisius is 4-7 on the season. The Golden Griffins haven't played since splitting four games at the EKU Colonel Classic Mar. 1-3. Canisius leads the all-time series versus Lehigh 4-3. The Griffs won the first four meetings but Lehigh has taken the last three, winning twice last season and once over spring break in 2022.

Binghamton is off to an 11-7 start. Last weekend the Bearcats were at JMU where they split two games with Saint Joseph's and dropped a pair to host James Madison. Lehigh leads the all-time series against Binghamton 5-1. The teams last met in 2012 with each side winning once in Radford, Va.

Cornell enters the weekend at 2-7. The Big Red have not played since being swept in doubleheaders at George Washington and George Mason to open March. The all-time series is tied 2-2 and Saturday's game will mark the first meeting since 2000, a 10-4 Cornell win.

Following the Penn State Softball Invitational Lehigh will visit Monmouth for a single game on Mar. 20 before opening the home schedule and Patriot League play with three games against Colgate, Mar. 23-24 at Leadership Park.
