UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In its final game at the Penn State Softball Invitational, Lehigh defeated Canisius 8-2 Sunday morning at Beard Field. The Mountain Hawks scored three runs in the first and added five in the fifth to support a strong pitching performance by senior Katelyn Young.
Â
Senior Brooke Cannon went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and junior Rory Dudley, first-year Holly Lovett and sophomore Sydney Parlett all drove in two runs as Lehigh finishes the weekend at 3-3 and moves to 10-13 overall.
Â
Lehigh's three-run first inning saw graduate student Josie Charles score on a double steal attempt and then Dudley drilled a two-run home run to left, her first of the season.
Â
The Mountain Hawks capitalized on two of Canisius' four errors to plate five more runs in the fifth inning.
Â
A dropped popup prolonged the inning for Lovett, who singled home two runs off the leg of pitcher Megan Giese. Parlett followed with a two-run double and first-year Peyton Sward capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Â
With the four Canisius errors, all eight Lehigh runs scored Sunday were unearned.
Â
Canisius (5-10) scored a run in the third on Gabi Farris' RBI single and added another run in the top of the fifth on Sydney Costan's solo home run.
Â
Young improved to 6-6 on the season, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will travel to Monmouth for a single game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before opening Patriot League play and the home schedule with three games against Colgate March 23-24.
