Â
First-year Peyton Sward went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while sophomore Chloe Hess returned to the circle with three perfect innings of work, as Lehigh falls to 10-14 on the season.
Â
Lehigh struck first, scoring four runs in the second inning as Sward singled home first-year Holly Lovett, who led off the frame with a double. Later in the inning Lehigh added three more runs as graduate student Emily Cimino, senior Brooke Cannon and junior Rory Dudley all drew bases-loaded walks.
Â
The Mountain Hawks added two more in the third as Sward tripled to score sophomore Sydney Parlett and then graduate student Josie Charles singled home Sward.
Â
In her first action in 10 days, Hess fired three perfect innings in the circle, striking out three and getting a couple of strong defensive plays from Lovett at third base.
Â
Monmouth (10-17) broke through for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, on an Abby Warner double, a Kiley O'Rourke single and a two-run double by Tessa Thompson.
Â
Mackenzie Bloss' sacrifice fly brough Monmouth within 6-5 after five innings of play. Bloss added another sac fly in the seventh, this one caught by Charles at the fence in left, to score Dani Dabroski with the tying run.
Â
With the international tiebreaker in effect, Lehigh scored two in the top of the eighth inning as junior Julia Mrochko scored on a throwing error after an infield single by Sward, and then Sward scored on a fielder's choice by first-year Gracie Smith.
Â
Lehigh was unable to record an out in the bottom of the eighth as the Hawks loaded the bases on a walk and a single. Thompson's second two-RBI double of the game, pulled Monmouth even at 8-8 and Coia followed with a game-winning drive to deep left to bring home the winning run.
Â
Monmouth had an 11-10 edge in hits and committed three errors to Lehigh's two.
Â
Parlett was the only other Mountain Hawk to record multiple hits.
Â
Senior Katelyn Young took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work. She walked two and struck out one. Junior Maria Urban allowed four runs (two earned) in 0.2 innings.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule and Patriot League play this weekend when they welcome Colgate to Leadership Park for a three-game series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at noon, followed by a single game Sunday also beginning at noon.
