Lehigh Opens Patriot League Play With Two Come-From-Behind Victories

3/24/2024 8:35:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two games. Two moderately-sized early deficits for the Lehigh softball team. At the end of the day, two comeback victories for the Mountain Hawks over Colgate to open the home and Patriot League slate Sunday at Leadership Park.

Lehigh trailed 4-0 after one-and-a-half innings of game one before scoring seven runs in the fifth on the way to a 10-5 decision. The Mountain Hawks gave up three runs in the first inning of game two, but scored three in the first and two in the fourth to win game two 5-3.

Graduate students Josie Charles and Emily Cimino and first-year Gracie Smith all totaled four hits over the two games. Cimino had five RBIs and picked up her 200th career hit with a single to center in the first inning of game one.

The Mountain Hawks are now 12-14 overall and 2-0 in the league while Colgate falls to 10-17 overall and starts league play at 0-2.

After going down 1-2-3 in the first inning, Colgate reeled off four runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Nora Megenity delivered a bases-clearing three-run double and then scored on a triple by Rachel Carney.

The teams traded solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, with junior Julia Mrochko putting Lehigh on the board with her second of the season and then Kiley Shelton answered for Colgate in the fifth to make it 5-1 Raiders.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lehigh scored seven two-out runs to take an 8-5 lead. Sophomore Sydney Parlett and Mrochko drew bases-loaded walks, which were followed by a game-tying two-run pinch-hit single by sophomore Abbey Tabaka.

Charles singled through the left side to plate Mrochko with the go-ahead run and Cimino brought home two more runs with her third hit of the game.

Lehigh added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single to left by Charles.

In the circle, senior Katelyn Young overcame the rough second inning to earn her seventh win of the season. Young allowed five runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Colgate opened game two by scoring three runs on six consecutive hits to open the game, but they would be the only runs of the game for the Raiders.

Lehigh answered with four hits of its own in the home first. Cimino brought home Charles with an RBI fielder's choice and a two-RBI single by first-year Holly Lovett tied the game at 3-3 after an inning of play.

The Mountain Hawks took the lead in the fourth when Cimino's drive to right fell in for a two-run double.

Lehigh pitching settled in after the first inning with junior Maria Urban throwing five innings of scoreless, four-hit relief after coming in for sophomore Chloe Hess. Adrienne Nardone led off the sixth with a double, her third hit of the game, but Young came out of the bullpen to get the final six outs, including the final two with the tying runs on base in the seventh.

The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will wrap-up their series on Monday with a single game beginning at 1 p.m. at Leadership Park. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
