Mountain Hawks Use Second-Half Surge to Defeat Dartmouth

2/26/2024 10:01:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

HARTFORD, Conn. - Lehigh men's lacrosse used a strong second-half surge to come away with an 11-6 win over Dartmouth Monday night at Trinity College. Lehigh improved to 2-2, and Dartmouth dropped to 1-2.

After being down 5-3 at halftime, the Mountain Hawks completely dominated the second half in all facets of the game. Lehigh scored the first eight goals of the second half and kept the Big Green off the scoreboard for the first 28 minutes of play after halftime.

Senior attackman Scott Cole was outstanding, scoring a game-high five goals. Cole was a key part of Lehigh's comeback in the second half as he went on a 4-0 run by himself to open up the third frame. With Cole's five goals scored, he now is tied with Andrew Petit for the ninth-most goals scored in program history (105). Cole has now scored 11 goals and added one assist in Lehigh's last two games.

Grant Rodny was the only other player besides Cole to record multiple points. Rodny finished with three points (2G, 1A). Rodny's second goal put Lehigh up 11-5 with 2:53 left in the game to seal the victory for the Mountain Hawks.

Nick Pecora stood on his head in net, making 15 saves, which is just one save shy of his career-high. Pecora ended the game with a 71% save percentage, which is a career-high for the senior goalkeeper.

Dartmouth won the faceoff battle, going 11-of-20 at the stripe. Sean Dow was 9-of-19 for the Mountain Hawks at the faceoff "x." Both teams had 32 shots, but the difference would come down to goalkeeping and defense as Pecora made five more saves than Dartmouth's Ryan Williamson.

The first half was a defensive battle, with Dartmouth striking first eight minutes into the quarter. Giovanni Procaccini's first-career goal tied things at one with 1:45 to play in the opening frame. Dartmouth would go on to outscore Lehigh 4-2 in the second quarter.

In addition to Procaccini scoring a goal, Quinn Amstrong, Brian Mullen and EJ Vasile all added goals for Lehigh. Henry Bonnie had three goals to lead the way for the Big Green.

The Mountain Hawks had 23 turnovers, while the Big Green had 18. For the third straight game, Richard Checo caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Pecora, Luke McAuliffe and Jack Thistle both caused two turnovers and Procaccini, Tyler Lahey, Nick Turini  and Raul Ochotorena all recorded a caused turnover.

The Mountain Hawks will host Villanova in the home opener on Saturday at 11 a.m.
