Mountain Hawks Outlast Charleston Southern 13-9 For Third-Straight Win
2/24/2024 12:24:00 AM | Baseball
Picking up the win for Lehigh was Jack Hamilton, who entered the game in relief for Alex Bouchard in the fourth inning. Hamilton tossed 1.1 innings, striking out three while allowing one earned run. Bouchard struck out a team-high eight batters while allowing seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. Charleston Southern's starter Sam Massey picked up the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits in a full 2.0 innings.
Lehigh, who tallied 14 hits on the evening, got their first two batters on base courtesy of singles from Jake Whitlinger and Ryan Cochran. Massey would record the next three outs in a row, however, one of which was a sac-fly from Andrew Kohl that scored Whitlinger for the game's first run.
The Mountain Hawks continued to hit well against Massey in the second, as the first three Lehigh batters reached first base. After loading the bases, Lehigh would score six runs over the course of the next four batters, which included a Whitlinger RBI single and two-run homer from Rafe Perich, his first of the season. CSU added a run in the bottom of the frame, but Lehigh held a 7-1 advantage after two.
After their massive six-run second inning, Lehigh continued to pour it on in the third. Dom Patrizi and Owen Walewander singled to open the inning, which made way for an Aidan Quinn RBI single and 2RBI double from Whitlinger, his third hit of the day. A two-run home run from CSU's Christian Bauman lessened the damage, but the Bucs now found themselves trailing 10-3 after only three innings.
Scoring slowed down for the next several innings before a solo home run from Dakota Miller gave CSU their fourth run of the night in the fifth inning. The Mountain Hawks responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth, setting their lead at nine runs with only 12 more outs remaining for the Bucs.
The game seemed to be out of reach for Charleston Southern, but a massive five-run bottom of the eighth rejuvenated the Buccaneer dugout. The Mountain Hawks used three different pitchers in the inning to get out of the jam, offering the Bucs a glimmer of hope in the final inning.
After going scoreless in the top of the frame, the Mountain Hawks turned to Tommy Lamar to record the final three outs after he earned the save in last weekend's win over Michigan State. The right-handed sophomore did allow one baserunner due to an error, however, Lamar calmly retired the Bucs in four batters to seal the win for his team.
Whitlinger led the charge for the Mountain Hawks offensively, batting 4-5 with four RBIs. Cochran, Perich and Butler each tallied two RBIs while Quinn and Kohl added one RBI apiece.
The Mountain Hawks will play game two of their three game series on Saturday, February 24 at 1:30 p.m. The series will conclude with game three on Sunday at 1 p.m.
