PHILADELPHIA - Lehigh women's basketball's offensive struggles led to a 53-44 loss to Drexel Wednesday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 6-3 and the Dragons improved to 3-3.Â
Junior forward Lily Fandre led the way with a team-high 11 points, and fifth-year wing Maddie Albrecht and sophomore forward Whitney Lind tallied 10 points apiece.Â
The Dragons scored the opening points three minutes into the game and they would hold the lead for the rest of the game.
Lehigh started off slow and was held scoreless until 5:19 left in the first quarter when Colleen McQuillen netted a layup. Both teams struggled offensively to start on Wednesday. Drexel held a 11-8 lead at the end of the first frame after fifth-year Maddie Albrecht scored a layup with three seconds remaining.
After another slow second quarter where Drexel held a 11-7 advantage, the Dragons led 22-15 at halftime.
Drexel completely dominated the third frame, outscoring Lehigh 18-6 after holding the Mountain Hawks scoreless for over six minutes.Â
Drexel led 40-21 heading into the fourth quarter. The Mountain Hawks were able to rally back in the fourth quarter after a 20-point deficit, cutting Drexel's lead to nine points, but it would be too little too late.Â
"We did us in the fourth quarter," said head coach Addie Micir. "The adjustment was that we were going to play fast, and our team lit up. I told them that's what we did. There was a little bit more of a belief that we could do it."
Lehigh shot 17-of-48 (35.4%) from the field and 2-of 15 (13.3%) from deep. Drexel shot 23-of-54 (42.6%% and 2-of-11 from long range.Â
Â
The Dragons also held a 36-25 advantage on the boards and a 11-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.Â
First-year Belle Bramer finished with a career-high six points and four rebounds, three of those were offensive.Â
"You know exactly what you're going to get from Belle and that's 100 percent effort," Micir said. "She's going to crash the glass, and she just plays defense like it matters, she cuts like it matters, she rebounds like it matters, and we needed it to matter in the fourth quarter, and she was the spark that made it matter."
Drexel's Amaris Baker scored a game-high 18 points. Â
Next up, Lehigh will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face Cornell on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
