Lehigh Dominates LIU in Season Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh women's basketball rolled to a dominating 83-59 victory over LIU Monday night in the season opener at Stabler Arena. Senior guard Ella Stemmer scored the opening basket on a three-pointer 30 seconds into the game and the Mountain Hawks would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

Senior guard Maddie Albrecht got Lehigh off to a 24-13 start in the first quarter after scoring nine of her 15 points in the first frame. Albrecht's 15 points were a team-high and she was one of two players to finish in double figures. Senior guard Colleen McQuillen tallied 14 points after going 4-of-7 from the field. Albrecht also had a game-highs of six rebounds and four assists. 

The Mountain Hawks had a very effective shooting night, going 32-of-56 from the field (57.1%) on Monday. They had 17 assists on 32 made field goals. Lehigh went into halftime with a comfortable 47-27 lead after shooting 10-of-15 (66.7) in both the first and the second quarter. 

The Sharks cut Lehigh's lead to 16 in the third quarter with 4:41 remaining, but that would be the fewest points they would trail by in the second half as Lehigh continued to extend its lead on Monday.

Albrecht scored a driving layup with 5:23 left in regulation to put Lehigh up by 27 points, which was the largest lead of the game. Lehigh would continue to make plays on both ends of the floor in the game's final minutes to help propel the Mountain Hawks to a 24-point victory.

First-years Belle Bramer and Sibelle Zambie both scored their first collegiate baskets in the final frame. Zambie netted two three-pointers to finish with six points on the night and Bramer had four points, two of which came on a layup plus a foul. 

Shanaii Gamble netted 18 points to lead the way for LIU. The Sharks shot 25-of-55 (45.5%) on Monday. 

The Sharks outrebounded the Mountain Hawks 30-27. They also had 23 turnovers compared to Lehigh's 15. Senior forward Meghan O'Brien had a fantastic defensive performance as she tallied a career-high of six steals. O'Brien also chipped nine points and four rebounds. Stemmer also had nine points and Whitney Lind chipped in eight points of her own. 

Next up, the Mountain Hawks will head to the midwest to take on Michigan on Friday at 7 p.m. at Crisler Center.
