ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Lehigh women's basketball battled with Michigan in the first half, but the second half proved to be the difference in the 86-55 loss Friday night at Crisler Arena With the loss, Lehigh dropped to 1-1 on the season and the Wolverines improved to 1-1.Â
"I thought we battled really hard in the first half," said head coach Addie Micir. "When we came out in the first half, I honestly didn't think we looked like us, right, so we really challenged them to share it and shoot it and get up shots, and I thought we really did for the rest of the half. In the second half, we didn't make those shots, and we had some live ball turnovers, and that allowed them to get confidence."Â
For the second straight game, fifth-year Maddie Albrecht led the way, scoring a team-high 14 points. Ann Arbor native Ella Stemmer also finished
in double figures in her homecoming game as she netted 11 points and sophomore Whitney Lind had 10 points of her own.
After shooting 56% in the first game, Lehigh struggled offensively on Friday, shooting 16-of-49 from the field (32.7%). The Wolverines shot 56.3% from the field after going 36-of-64 from the field. Lehigh also struggled to take care of the ball, committing 24 turnovers. Michigan finished with 19 turnovers. The Wolverines also held a 26-19 advantage in rebounds.
Both teams started off slow as they had their worst shooting performances in the first 10 minutes with the Wolverines holding a 17-8 lead after the first quarter.
Michigan's Syla Swords made a layup with 3:34 remaining in the second quarter to put the Wolverines up 14 points, but Lehigh cut the Wolverines lead to seven at halftime as the Mountain Hawks trailed 38-31 after the first 20 minutes.Â
Lily Fandre netted the first bucket of the second half to cut Michigan's lead to five, but the Wolverines took over from there, going on a 10-0 run in four minutes to take a 50-35 lead.Â
Michigan would go on to outscore Lehigh 25-9 in the third quarter to take a 63-40 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action. The Wolverines continued to put pressure on Lehigh on both sides of the ball as they outscored Lehigh 23-15.
Michigan's Swords finished with a game-high of 20 points on Friday.Â
The Mountain Hawks will have less than 48 hours before taking on their next opponent as they will head to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern on Sunday at 3 p.m. EST.
"There's a lot of good lessons to be learned, so we will say thanks to Michigan for learning our pace and physicality and everything, and that will prepare us well for Sunday, "Micir said. "For us, it's getting back to us and getting back to making sure we respond a little better."
