BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks take to the road for the first time during the dual meet season as No. 18 Lehigh faces No. 21 Pittsburgh Sunday at Fitzgerald Field House. Both teams are 1-0 on the dual season with wins over EIWA opponents. Last weekend, Lehigh opened its dual season with a 37-7 win over Morgan State. The Mountain Hawks won eight of 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in six of those eight victories. Junior Sheldon Seymour and first-year Zeke Dubler had wins by fall to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks. Pittsburgh defeated Navy in its dual opener and last competed at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Nov. 10. Both teams feature seven wrestlers ranked in the top 33 by InterMat.Â

No. 18 Lehigh opened the dual meet season with a 37-7 win over EIWA newcomer Morgan State Nov. 15 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Despite missing some familiar faces in the middle and upperweights, Lehigh's lightweights set the tone with three straight bonus wins to open the dual. The Mountain Hawks won eight bouts overall, with six bonus victories. Lehigh had two falls, three technical falls and a major decision. Lehigh's pins came from junior Sheldon Seymour (125) and first-year Zeke Dubler (165). Sophomore Ryan Crookham and senior Malyke Hines followed Seymour's fall with back-to-back technical fall victories to give Lehigh an early 16-0 lead. Lehigh's third technical fall, secured by first-year Griffin Gonzalez at 157, staked the Mountain Hawks to a 24-0 lead at the halfway point.
Â
Four wrestlers made their Lehigh dual debuts in the win over Morgan State. Deferred first-years Griffin Gonzalez (157) and Zeke Dubler (165) both posted bonus point victories in their first dual appearances for the Brown and White. Gonzalez posted a technical fall win over Shaymus MacIntosh to give Lehigh a 24-0 lead at the halfway point and then Dubler followed with a second period pin over Cooper Lockhart. Also making their dual debuts against the Bears were deferred first-year Richie Grungo, who dropped a tight bout wrestling a weight up at 174 and true first-year heavyweight Calvin Lachman.
Â
Kelvin Griffin's 2023-24 season was highlighted by his ability to pin his opponents. Griffin went 26-11 in his deferred first-year season with 15 wins by fall. Those 15 pins ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders and set a new program record for Lehigh first-year wrestlers. Griffin's 15 falls rank second overall in Lehigh single-season history, behind the 16 pins by Mark Lieberman in his second NCAA championship season in 1978-79.
Â
Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro wrestled for the Panthers from 1985-1989, under the guidance of the late Rande Stottlemyer, who retired following the 2012-13 season. Pittsburgh's only four-time All-American, Santoro amassed a 167-13 record in four seasons for the Panthers, and won national titles at 142 in 1988 and 1989. A three-time EWL Champion, Santoro is also the Panthers' career leader with 43 falls and posted an incredible 97-3 record over his final two seasons. He was inducted into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. Pittsburgh assistant coach Drew Headlee returned to his alma mater in 2014 after two seasons as Lehigh's volunteer assistant coach. Eighth-year Panthers head coach Keith Gavin is also a Pitt graduate. After graduation, Gavin trained and competed in freestyle with the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club (now Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club) before moving on to coaching positions at Virginia and Oklahoma.
Â
Pittsburgh won its dual meet opener against EIWA member Navy 35-3 back on Nov. 2 and will wrestle its second dual meet of the season on Sunday. The Panthers were last in action at the Nov. 10 Journeymen Collegiate Classic, where graduate student Reece Heller won the Hammer Award for winning the 184A pool. Heller is one of seven Panthers ranked by InterMat, leading the way at No. 13 at 184. The Panthers have top 15-ranked wrestlers at the final four weights. Keith Gavin is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh's head coach.
Â
Pitt is Lehigh's sixth oldest rival with Sunday's dual marking the 69th meeting in a series that dates back to 1916. Lehigh leads the series 45-21-2. Pitt has won four of the last five duals in the series, with Lehigh last winning inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in November 2021. Pat Santoro is 9-6 in duals against his alma mater.
Â
Sunday's dual begins at 2 p.m. from Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh. The dual will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and ESPN+. There will be no Lehigh audio coverage for this dual.
Â
Lehigh will be off Thanksgiving weekend and the Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday Dec. 8 when they host three-time defending national champion Penn State at PPL Center in Allentown for a 2 p.m. match. It will be the 112th meeting in Lehigh's most-contested dual meet series.
