Mountain Hawks Fall 21-12 Sunday at No. 21 Pittsburgh

11/24/2024 4:36:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

PITTSBURGH – No. 18 Lehigh raced to an early 6-0 lead, but No. 21 Pitt claimed the next three bouts to take an 11-6 lead on the way to a 21-12 win over the Mountain Hawks Sunday at Fitzgerald Field House.
A last-second victory at 141 sparked the Panthers, who took the lead with a technical fall at 149 and never looked back.

Six of the 10 bouts were decided by three points or fewer, with Pitt claiming four of those six bouts. The Mountain Hawks won four bouts on the afternoon and fall to 1-1 on the dual season, while Pitt is 2-0.

Junior Sheldon Seymour opened the dual with his second win this month over Pitt's Nick Babin at 125. Seymour scored takedowns in the first and second periods and battled on bottom against the tough-on-top Babin to pull out a 6-3 decision.

With sophomore Ryan Crookham under the weather, first-year Matt Lopes stepped in up at 133 and delivered a 3-2 decision over Vinnie Santaniello. Lopes trailed 1-0 in the third period before securing the winning takedown to defeat the 31st-ranked Panther.

The tides turned at 141, where Lehigh senior Malyke Hines was in a 1-1 match late with Anthony Santaniello. It was Santaniello who scored the late takedown to secure the 4-1 win, putting Pitt on the board.

Sophomore Kelvin Griffin met Finn Solomon at 149 with Griffin having to spend most of the first period fighting off his back to avoid giving up the fall. Solomon turned things on in the second period to claim a 19-4 technical fall and give the Panthers an 8-6 lead.

At 157, first-year Logan Rozynski and Dylan Evans traded escapes, but it was a second period technical violation against Rozynski that gave Evans the deciding point in a 2-1 victory that put Pitt up 11-6 halfway through the dual.

Senior Thayne Lawrence came out of the break with Lehigh's third win of the day, a 9-4 decision over Kelin Laffey at 165. Lawrence scored takedowns in the first and third periods and added a reversal to win his season dual debut.

Another 1-1 match decided by a late takedown came at 174 where Pitt's Luca Augustine scored three to defeat sophomore Rylan Rogers 4-1. An 8-0 major decision by Reece Heller over junior Jack Wilt at 184 gave the Panthers an 18-9 advantage with two bouts remaining.

Senior Michael Beard was held to a regular decision by Mac Stout in a matchup of ranked wrestlers at 197. Beard was never challenged but could not secure the takedown needed for bonus points, settling for a 9-2 decision.

In the final bout, junior JT Davis moved up to heavyweight to face Dayton Pitzer. It was Davis who had the two best shots from neutral, including one in the final 30 seconds of the bout, but an escape gave Pitzer the 1-0 decision to close out the dual.

Lehigh leads the all-time series versus Pitt 45-22-2 but the Panthers have now won the last three duals by scores of 21-12, 21-12 and 22-12.

The Mountain Hawks will be off next weekend and will return to action when they host No. 1 Penn State at PPL Center in Allentown, Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
