10/24/2024 9:41:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh wrestling team kicked off the 2024-25 campaign with the annual Brown and White Intrasquad Thursday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Eleven bouts were contested in the season-opening event on a night that featured a higher quantity of offensive wrestling and points on the scoreboard, compared to normal intrasquad matches.

Of the 11 contested bouts, only one had fewer than nine combined points scored. There was one fall, three technical falls and three major decisions on the evening as well. Seven of Lehigh's nine newcomers wrestled in front of the Grace Hall crowd for the first time.

Senior Sheldon Seymour met true first-year Mason Ziegler in the opening bout at 125, with Seymour making a pair of first period takedowns stand in a 7-2 decision.

The second bout at 125 saw first-year Matty Lopes pile up the points, with six takedowns, including four in the first three minutes, in a 20-6 major decision over deferred first year Logan Wadle.

Senior Malyke Hines delivered the first technical fall of the night. With two takedowns, a reversal and eight near fall points to his credit, Hines secured a third takedown of the final seconds of his bout with first-year Seamus Mack at 141 to secure the 18-2 victory.

The only bout not to feature at least nine combined points was at 157 where true first-year Jadon Skellenger defeated deferred first-year Griffin Gonzalez 4-2 on the strength of a first period takedowns.

There were three bouts contested at 165 Thursday night. In the first, senior Thayne Lawrence defeated sophomore Owen Quinn 8-1 on the strength of takedowns in the first and third periods along with a strong rideout in the second period.

Senior Max Brignola then built a big lead over first-year Zeke Dubler before securing the lone pin of the night early in the third period at the 5:19 mark.

Deferred first-year Richie Grungo met true first-year Dom Federici in the third bout at 165. Grungo was strong early with three first period takedowns. Federici battled back for a takedown of his own in the third period but Grungo prevailed by an 11-6 decision.

In the first of two bouts at 174, deferred first-year Jared Schoppe totaled four takedowns, including two in the opening period, in a 14-4 major decision over sophomore Liam Gil-Swiger.

Sophomore Rylan Rogers wasted little time piling on points in his bout with junior Keegan Gagnon at 174. Rogers scored five first period takedowns and followed the fifth with a four-point near fall to secure a 19-4 technical fall victory in just 1:40.

Sophomore 184-pounder Remy Brancato-Roed piled up four takedowns in a 13-4 major decision over sophomore 197-pound wrestler Dontae Hoose.

In the final bout of the night, junior heavyweight Nathan Taylor impressed in a 17-2, second-period technical fall over first-year Calvin Lachman.

The Mountain Hawks will open the 2024-25 season with a contingent of wrestlers at the Nov. 3 Princeton Open in New Jersey. The dual meet season begins Friday, Nov. 15 when Lehigh hosts EIWA newcomer Morgan State at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
