BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team will open up Patriot League play against American on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Stabler Arena.
The Mountain Hawks ended the non-league slate with an 8-3 record after dropping their last two games to Pitt and Rider. Lehigh returned to action for the first time against the Broncs on Dec. 30 after a 20 day hiatus and struggled offensively, making a season-low six three-pointers and going 6-of-31 (16.2%) from beyond the arc.
While Lehigh forced overtime against Rider, the Mountain Hawks were outscored 15-5 in the final five minutes and suffered a 67-57 loss to Rider.
Sophomore forward Lily Fandre forced the game into overtime after she drove down into the paint with 3.7 seconds left and nailed a layup as time expired. Fandre finished with a game-high of 15 points.
Maddie Albrecht also finished in double figures as she netted a career-high of 11 points. Albrecht also made her first-ever start in the game against Rider.
Through 11 games played, Ella Stemmer is pacing the way with 18.4 points per game, which also ranks third in the Patriot League in scoring.
Colleen McQuillen is leading the Patriot League in assists per game . She's had four straight games where she's recorded at least five assists.
Last season, Lehigh won its Patriot League opener against Army. If Lehigh wins on Wednesday, it would mark the seventh straight win in the Patriot League opener.
The Eagles are 2-9 and have lost their last four games. Lehigh and American had two common non-league opponents in La Salle and Delaware. The Mountain Hawks defeated both the Explorers and the Blue Hens, while American fell to La Salle and Delaware.
American is led by Emily Johns, who is averaging 10.8 points per game. As a team, the Eagles are averaging 59.6 points per game and the Mountain Hawks are averaging 75.8 points per game.
Lehigh is 18-36 all-time against American. The Mountain Hawks have won the last two games with both of those wins coming last season. If Lehigh defeats American, it would mark the first time that the Mountain Hawks have won three straight meetings against the Eagles.
