BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team dropped its Patriot League opener to American, suffering a 67-57 loss Wednesday night at Stabler Arena.
"Give American credit, "said head coach Addie Micir. "They played really really hard and won the battle on the boards, and they had far too many second chance opportunities. They made us pay with turnovers. It took us a little bit to settle in defensively, and when we did really really well, and we have to be there from the jump."
The Mountain Hawks are now 8-4 (0-1 PL), while the Eagles are 3-9 (1-0 PL). Just like its last game against Rider, Lehigh had a chance to tie at the end of regulation, but Ella Stemmer could not get the three-pointer to fall as time expired.
Colleen McQuillen hit two free throws with 55 seconds left to put Lehigh up 65-64, but the Eagles ended the game on a 4-0 run.
Lauren Stack responded with a layup with 45 seconds left to put American up by one and the Eagles would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Three players finished in double figures for Lehigh. Meghan O'Brien paced the way with 14 points and nine rebounds, Lily Fandre tallied 13 points, and Maddie Albrecht tied her career-high with 11 points.
The game was back and forth, as there were 16 lead changes and seven ties.
The Eagles started out fast, scoring 22 first-quarter points while Lehigh scored 16 in the opening 10 minutes.
American went into halftime with a 34-33 lead after Laura Nogues forced a Lehigh turnover and made a layup with three seconds left. Nogues recorded a game-high of 16 points. Emily Johns also had 15 points for American to go along with six rebounds.
The Eagles would go on to outscore Lehigh 19-17 in the third quarter to take a three-point lead heading into the final frame.
American's three-point lead in the fourth quarter would be the difference as both teams finished with 15 points in the final 10 minutes.
Turnovers would play a factor on Wednesday as the Mountain Hawks tallied a season-high 23 turnovers. American finished the game with 19 turnovers.
"We have to play cleaner," Micir said. People need to want the ball. They showed us that we need to get better at it."
The Mountain Hawks shot 22-of-57 from the field (38.6%) and 7-of-30 from beyond the arc (23.3%). American shot 26-of-62 (41.9%) from the field and 1-of-15 from distance (6.7%).
The Eagles scored 44 of their 68 points inside the paint.
Lehigh also got outrebounded 40-34. The Eagles had 15 second chance points, while the Mountain Hawks had five.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the three-game home stand on Saturday against Loyola. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
