Lehigh Downed 1-0 to Lafayette

9/23/2023 8:49:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - On a cold and rainy night, Lehigh men's soccer battled the weather, but the Mountain Hawks were ultimately defeated to rival Lafayette 1-0 Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

"Frustrating is the word that comes up the most," said head coach Dean Koski. "I don't think we did a great job at  executing when we needed to. I don't think we were as disciplined as we needed to be. We were sloppy at times, and it had nothing to do with the conditions - it just had to do with how we performed, so we need really good performances from our best players against Patriot League teams, and we didn't get those kind of performances."

Lehigh is now 1-5-2 (0-2 PL), and Lafayette is 4-3-2 (1-1 PL).

Lafayette's Lawrence Aydlett found an open net just 15 minutes into action, giving the Leopards the 1-0 lead early on, and that would be the lone goal of the game.

"It was a one-goal game on a mistake by us, and they capitalized on us," Koski said.

Hale Lombard found Aydlett in transition and the Mountain Hawks were not able to stop Adylett in time before he got an open shot on net.

While Lafayette scored rather quickly, Lehigh did a good job at defending them for the remainder of the game, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to generate easy chances.

Lehigh's best chance of the day came in the 77th minute after Trey Sheeler hit the post after the Mountain Hawks were granted a free kick.

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Gross earned his first start of the season making three saves. While Gross earned the start, he received a red card in the 90th minute after he touched the ball outside of the box.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Chyzowych was called into action for the remaining time. Chyzowych saved one shot .

Sophomore defender Matthew Aitchison also earned his first start of his career.

Lafayette outshot Lehigh 12-7 on Saturday. Sheeler had a team-high two shots.

The Mountain Hawks will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate on Wednesday, which is the first of three straight road matches for Lehigh.
