BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's soccer picked up its first result of the season after tying Temple 1-1 at home Monday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex
"It's a result, and sometimes you have to learn how to compete for results," said head coach Dean Koski. "I thought it was sloppy at times for both teams. I thought it got a little too physical and disruptive for both teams, not just for us. For us, we have to be more disciplined, and that will come with experience".
With the tie, the Mountain Hawks moved to 0-1-1, while the Owls are now 0-0-2.
It was a scrappy battle for both team's, with eight total cards given out.Temple's goalkeeper Flannan Riley was given a yellow card with seven minutes remaining in the first half after taking down Athanasios Cosse in the Box.
As a result, the Mountain Hawks were granted a penalty kick and first-year forward Thomas Robertson stepped up to the box in the 38th minute and nailed it to score his first collegiate goal.
"It was important that he wanted to step up and take a penalty kick," Koski said. Athan got fouled, and I think he did a good job creating some pressure on them in the box. The defender really had no choice but to take him down, but credit to Athan for creating that."
While Robertson was able to connect on the goal, Lehigh's best opportunity of the game came in the 21st minute when Riley lost control of the ball for Temple and kicked it to Austen Carranza as he was wide open with no one in front of them. Carranza got a shot off, but it sailed high.
Lehigh went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Owls were able to find the equalizer in the 53rd minute behind a Felix Ewald goal.
Michael Laret was given a red card in the 84th minute after picking up the first card of the game in the 35th minute. The Mountain Hawks had to fight hard for the remaining six minutes as Lehigh was down a player.
Despite being man-down, Lehigh allowed no shots for the remainder of the game.
The Mountain Hawks had 11 total shots on Monday to Temple's 19.
Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski made five saves. Riley was credited with four saves for the Owls.
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for the first game of a four-game road trip. Lehigh will play Columbia on Friday at 7 p.m. in New York, N.Y.
