Lehigh Picks Up Second Straight Draw

9/1/2023 10:16:00 PM | Men's Soccer

NEW YORK - Lehigh men's soccer recorded its second straight tie after drawing Columbia 1-1 Friday night in New York. The Mountain Hawks moved to 0-1-2, while the Lions are 0-0-1.

"I like the way that we competed," said head coach Dean Koski. "I liked the way that we brought energy. We weathered some storms early on, we found the goal off of a penalty kick, but we just have to figure out how can we lock up games when we have the lead."

The first half was a defensive battle between both teams.

While it was a different day and different game, the story remained similar to Monday's game as the Mountain Hawks converted their only goal of the game off of a penalty kick.

The Lions were called for a handball in the 54th minute, and junior forward Perry Kingson stepped up to the box and converted the penalty kick for the Mountain Hawks.

While the Mountain Hawks spent the majority of the game taking away Columbia's chances, the Lions were granted a penalty kick after Beckett Wenger fouled a Columbia player in the box.

Will DeNight stepped up for the Lions and converted the penalty kick, which was ultimately the equalizer.

Lehigh was outshot 13-8 on Friday, but the Mountain Hawks tallied four shots on goal, while the Lions had three shots on goal.

"For us, if you're not creating chances, then that's a concern, "Koski said. "I think we have the ability to create more chances if we value the ball more, particularly in the attacking half. I think we give it away too easy at times, and then we spend more time defending. Again, it's early on in the season, and we have to knock some rust off of some guys, and we have to ask guys to hold themselves to a better standard of possessing the ball."

Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski tallied two saves on Friday, while his counterpart Michael Collodi had three saves.

"Getting results on the road is important, particularly in the league because traveling is hard, and competing against good teams is hard," Koski said. "This is going to be a tough month for us with being on the road a lot in September, but it's a good opportunity for us to grow as  a group and to get prepared for competing on the road."

The Mountain Hawks continue their road swing when they take on La Salle in Philadelphia on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
