BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite a hard-fought, valiant effort, Lehigh men's soccer suffered a 2-1 loss to St. John's in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.Â
Down 2-1 with seconds remaining, sophomore defender Sam Davis had an opportunity to score the game-tying goal, but couldn't get it to go as his header hit the post. Davis was one of two players for Lehigh to play all 90 minutes on Thursday.
Max McNulty notched both goals for the Red Storm .McNulty first scored the opening goal in the 26th minute to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead. St. John's held onto the lead in the first half.
Head Coach Dean Koski said they were trying to chase the game in the second half after being down a goal going into halftime.
First-year Trey Sheeler scored his first collegiate goal on a corner kick from Austen Carranza in the 54th minute to tie things at one. Sheeler was one of three first-years to start their collegiate opener. Emmett Shea and Thomas Robertson also started for the Mountain Hawks.
"We're young," Koski said."The vast majority of our guys are first-years and sophomores, so we're going to make mistakes like we did today. That was Trey's first game. He did well to make the goal, and he made some mistakes defensively, but that's what you're going to find, and there's some balance in that, but we have to get our first-years some minutes because we need them."
While St. John's Antek Sienkiel received a red card for the Red Storm in the 67th minute, which put Lehigh up a man, McNulty scored the game-winning goal for the Red Storm in the 75th minute.Â
"It's disappointing to me that we gave up a goal being up a man," Koski said.
St. John's had a 15-5 advantage in shots. The Red Storm also had seven corner kicks, while the Mountain Hawks had two corner kicks.Â
"We're going to be a defensive oriented team," Koski said.
Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski earned the start in net for the Mountain Hawks and did not record any saves. Alec McLachlan had one save for St. John's.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Monday when they host Temple at 6 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Monday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
