Lehigh Downs Monmouth in Season Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Lehigh women's soccer program opened its 2023 campaign with a 1-0 win over Monmouth on Friday night.

"As a coaching staff, we are incredibly proud of the team's performance tonight," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "Monmouth is a talented program and we were disciplined in executing our principles on both sides of the ball. Tonight's win was a collective team effort and super fun to watch."

This was Lehigh's first win over the Hawks since August 31, 2018. Monmouth is the reigning Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) regular season champions, and were picked to finish first in the CAA Preseason Poll.

The first half was a scoreless battle between the teams, with Lehigh leading 4-3 in shots at halftime. Fifth-year Ryelle Shuey led the opening effort with two shots.

Early into the second half the Mountain Hawks struck first at 49:07, when junior midfielder Zoe Schutter scored the first goal of the season off an assist from junior forward Corinne Lyght.

Lehigh maintained momentum, recording six shots in the remainder of the half as the Mountain Hawks held on to secure the first victory of the season.

A solid Lehigh defense successfully defended eight Monmouth corner kicks, five of which occurred in the first half.

First-years Mia Tuckwood and Macy McCallum got their first collegiate starts, with Aminah Baruwa and Rylie Moschella also recording minutes.

Senior goalkeeper Violette Bonvallet played all 90 minutes, recording one save. Her Monmouth counterpart, Cassandra Coster made two saves while allowing one goal against.

The Mountain Hawks are back in action on Sunday at Villanova with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
