BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's lacrosse team will compete for a spot in the Patriot League Championship Game when the third-seeded Mountain Hawks take on second-seeded Army West Point Friday at 7 p.m. in the Patriot League semifinals. Friday's game will be played at Boston University's Nickerson Field. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
The last time these two teams met in the Patriot League Tournament was in 2019 in the Patriot League Championship. The Black Knights won 11-7.Â
Lehigh exploded for an 8-0 run in the second half against Lafayette on Tuesday in the Patriot League quarterfinals after being down 3-2 at halftime. The Mountain Hawks went on to win 12-8. That game marked the 15th straight victory for Lehigh over the Leopards.Â
Christian Mule' led the way with five points after dishing out five assists. Mule' leads the team in assists and ranks third in the nation in assists per game (2.93).Lehigh's starting attack unit has been a force to be reckoned with. The trio of Mule, Scott Cole and Justin Tiernan have combined for more points than any other starting attack trio in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse (192 points).
Cole, the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, has put up a team-high of 72 points (48G, 28 A), Mule' is next with 70 points (29G, 41A) and Justin Tiernan has scored 50 points (41G, 9).Â
Fifth-year Mike Sisselberger once again had another impressive performance on Tuesday, winning 16 of-21 faceoffs, while picking up nine ground balls. Sisselberger also caused an important turnover at the end of the game, which led to a goal from Dakota Eierman. Lafayette had scored four straight goals to cut Lehigh's lead to three with 1:56 remaining in regulation, but Eierman's goal stopped the run.Â
First-year Richard Checo caused two turnovers in the win over the Leopards. Checo has now caused 50 turnovers and picked up 59 ground balls. He causes a nation-leading 3.57 turnovers per game.
Lehigh suffered a 12-10 loss to Army at home on March 18. Lehigh was leading 6-4 at halftime, but the Black Knights completely shut out the Mountain Hawks in the third quarter, while scoring four goals to come back. Scott Cole and Justin Tienan both netted three goals for Lehigh. Army's Evan Plunkett had six points (2G, 4A) in that game. Plunkett was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year on Monday. Plunkett has scored a team-leading 51 points (29 G, 22A).Â
Penalties were costly in that first game as Lehigh had 10 total penalties and Army had nine extra-man opportunities. Army has an overall record of 10-3 this season.Â
The Black Knights only league loss was to Boston University. The Terriers will be playing Loyola in the first game of the day on Friday. The opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.Â
If the Mountain Hawks win on Friday, they would advance to the Patriot League Championship for the second time in the last three years. The Patriot League Championship will be played on Sunday at 12 p.m. and will air on CBS Sports Network.
