Mountain Hawks Take Home 10 First-Place Finishes as Hosts of the Covert Classic While Competing at the Penn Relays

BETHLEHEM, Pa.  — The Lehigh women's track and field program hosted the Carol and John Covert Classic at the Goodman Track and Field Complex Friday and Saturday, April 28-29 and came away with 10 event winners.

The non-team scoring event featured seven other teams that joined the Mountain Hawks at this year's Covert Classic: DeSales, Lafayette, Loyola (Md.), Monmouth, Moravian, Muhlenberg and Saint Joseph's. Lehigh also sent individuals to compete at the prestigious Penn Relays.

Jumps
Sophomores Lillian Mauger, Keisha Modi and Talamini-Kelemen and senior Avery Roze finished first through fourth in the long jump, with Mauger winning the event with a mark of 5.63m. Modi leaped a distance of 5.57m for second place while Talamini-Kelemen finished third with a mark of 5.34m. Roze recorded a distance of 5.28m which was good enough for fourth.

The Mountain Hawks finished first, second and third in the triple jump with Talamini-Kelemen earning a first-place finish with a leap of 11.76m. Junior Nina Cialone placed second with a distance of 11.53m while senior Rachel Sequeira finished third with a mark of 11.33m.

Sophomore Randi Conroy won the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.65m while four Mountain Hawks finished in the top-four spots in the high with senior Calista Marzolino winning with a mark of 1.67m. Sophomore Izabel Fronc finished third with 1.62m while junior Kerry Perna and first-year Melanie LaCorte finished tied for fourth at 1.57m.

At Penn Relays, first-year Laura Reigle finished tied for seventh in the pole vault, clearing 3.88m.
Mid-Distance/Distance
First-year Lucy Afanasewicz won the 1,500m race in a time of 4:38.45 as Lehigh claimed first through sixth in this event. First-year Maddison Hayes, junior Abigail Tenreiro, seniors Annalise Davis and Andrea Miller and sophomore Riley Morrell completed the race from second to sixth respectively.

Sophomores Lauryn Heskin and Svea Wickelgren were the top two finishers in the 800m race, with Heskin crossing the finish line in 2:12.74 while Wickelgren finished in 2:13.94. Senior Andrea Miller placed fifth in the event with a time of 2:21.39.

Sophomore Savanah Beavers finished in first place in the 3,000m steeplechase, doing so in a time of 10:58.92, almost 47 seconds ahead of her teammate, senior Martina Sell, who finished in second in 11:45.72. Junior Andrine Larsen placed second in the 5,000m race, doing so in 19:11.36, four seconds behind the top-place finisher.

At the Penn Relays, the team of Elena Perez-Segnini, Ashley Struck, Abby Klebe and Christina Yakaboski finished in eighth in the distance medley relay in a time of 11:49.43, which places them third all-time in program history.

Sprints
Senior Ashley Griesmeyer was the top finisher in the 100m hurdles, winning the event with a time of 14.86 seconds and while senior Chae Kim and sophomore Chelsi Chevannes crossed the finish line in 15.11 seconds and 15.87 seconds for third and fourth place respectively. First-year Amber Barrios finished second in the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:05.37 while sophomore Lauren Roy rounded out the top five with a time of 1:10.51.

Lehigh's "A" squad of Barrios, sophomore Svea Wickelgren, first-year Sydney Kusner and senior Anna Murphy finished first in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:01.96

The quartet of first-year Grace Kennedy, junior Lindsay MacLellan, junior Simone Davey and sophomore Stephanie Webb ran a time of 3:59.54 in the 4x400m relay at the Penn Relays, to qualify for the finals. Webb, Kennedy, Griesmeyer and first-year Gianna Mangili finished 23rd with a time of 48.60 seconds.
Throws
Junior Karina Roze won the javelin with a distance of 36.69m and finished sixth in the discus at 40.76m. Sophomore Grace Aggen and senior Emma Harrington finished second and third respectively in the discus. Aggen threw a distance of 47.69m while Harrington reached 43.85m.

The Mountain Hawks' now will prepare to host the 2023 Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday and Saturday, May 5-6 at the Goodman Track and Field Complex. The meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
