Lehigh to Face Army West Point in Patriot League Quarterfinals Friday

4/27/2023 10:15:00 AM | Women's Tennis

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team is headed to West Point, N.Y. for the Patriot League Tournament, where the sixth-seeded Mountain Hawks will open up action with a quarterfinal match against host and No. 3 seed Army West Point, slated for 12:45 p.m. Friday.

The Mountain Hawks will be looking to take down the Black Knights and punch their first semifinals ticket since 2018.

Lehigh finished the regular season at 6-10 overall and 2-5 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks defeated Loyola in their league opener in mid-March and also won their 20th straight meeting with rival Lafayette.

The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed a relatively consistent lineup throughout the season, led by sophomore Hamsa Javagal at the No. 1 singles spot. A multi-time Patriot League honorable mention recipient, including this past week, Javagal is tied for the team lead with nine singles victories and also is tied for the team lead in doubles wins at nine with regular partner first-year Bella Peters. Javagal and Peters recently moved up from the No. 3 doubles spot to No. 2.

Junior Megha Dania also has nine singles wins, competing at the No. 2 flight. Megha Dania plays No. 1 doubles along her sister Anushka Dania, with Anushka also playing at the No. 5 singles flight.

Sophomore Allyce Gaborik and senior Junmoke James are expected to play in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions, respectively, and will likely team up at No. 3 doubles.

The No. 6 singles position will feature either Peters or first-year Helena Cilella.

Army West Point, the defending Patriot League Champions, finished the regular season at 19-8 overall and 5-2 in the league. The Black Knights' two losses came to the top two seeds, Boston University and Navy, while Army did not face Colgate. Lehigh did not face Holy Cross as their early March match in Worcester, Mass., was canceled due to weather.

Lehigh and Army met April 22 in Bethlehem with the Black Knights prevailing 5-2. Javagal and James picked up singles wins for the Mountain Hawks.

The Patriot League Tournament kicks off Thursday with the opening round match between No. 8 Lafayette and No. 9 Holy Cross at 1 p.m.

Friday's action begins at 8:30 a.m. with No. 1 seed Boston University facing the winner of Thursday's match. No. 4 Bucknell will face No. 5 Colgate at 10:15 a.m., followed by Lehigh and Army West Point at 12:45 p.m. The fourth quarterfinal, matching No. 2 Navy and No. 7 Loyola will begin at 3:15 p.m.

Saturday's semifinals are slated for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with the championship match set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
