TULSA, Okla. – Senior Josh Humphreys advanced to Friday morning's quarterfinal round and all five Lehigh qualifiers advanced to day two as the Mountain Hawks competed in session two of the NCAA Championships Thursday night at BOK Center.

Lehigh went 3-2 in Thursday's evening session, going 1-2 in the championship round of 16 and 2-0 in first round consolation bouts.

The Mountain Hawks finished day one in a tie for 22nd place with nine points.

Humphrey's match with No. 12 seed Kendall Coleman of Purdue almost mirrored his morning match against Ohio State's Paddy Gallagher. The match was scoreless after one period. Humphreys escaped early in the second, and scrambled his way into a third period takedown to win a 3-0 decision.

The No. 5 seed at 157, Humphreys will now face No. 4 Jared Franek of North Dakota State in the quarterfinals. He needs one win on Friday to secure his second career All-America honor and first podium finish at the national tournament.

Graduate student Tate Samuelson battled No. 1 seed Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa in the round of 16 at 184. A second period takedown plus riding time proved to be the difference in a 4-2 decision for Keckeisen, dropping Samuelson to the consolations.

Lehigh's other No. 5 seed, sophomore Michael Beard, was knocked off by No. 12 Zac Braunagel of Illinois 7-6 at 197. Beard scored takedowns in each of the first two periods and led 5-2 after two, but Braunagel came back with a pair of third period takedowns and kept Beard down at the end of the bout to claim the one-point win.

In consolation action, sophomore Malyke Hines stayed alive at 141 with a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Campbell's Shannon Hanna. Trailing 4-2 after two periods, Hines escaped in the third and then scored a takedown, before riding out to secure the one-point decision.

First-year heavyweight Nathan Taylor closed out the day with a bonus point win, defeating Bucknell's Dorian Crosby by an 11-1 major decision. Taylor totaled four takedowns, including two in the final period to secure the bonus point. He will next face Harvard's Yaraslau Slavikouski in a rematch of the EIWA semifinals from March 5, won by Taylor.

Penn State leads the team race after day one with 26 points, followed by Iowa (21.5) and Missouri (17.5).

The 2023 NCAA Championships continue Friday morning with session three, featuring the quarterfinals and two rounds of consolations, beginning at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT. Session three will be televised on ESPNU with streaming video of every mat available on ESPN+.
