Lehigh Advances Three To Round of 16 As NCAA Championships Begin in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Lehigh wrestlers posted a 3-2 record Thursday afternoon during session one of the NCAA Championships at BOK Center. The Mountain Hawks' two No. 5 seeds, senior Josh Humphreys (157) and sophomore Michael Beard (197) both advanced to the championship round of 16 as did graduate student Tate Samuelson, who erased a third period deficit with a reversal and a fall at 184.
The Mountain Hawks finished session one with six team points.
Humphreys won a 3-0 decision over Ohio State's Paddy Gallagher behind a second period escape and a third period takedown. He will next face No. 12 Kendall Coleman of Purdue.
Samuelson trailed Pitt's Reece Heller 2-1 after yielding a second period reversal. In the third, Samuelson was able to reverse Heller to his back and secure the fall at 5:45, avenging a one-point loss to the Panther back in November. Samuelson will next face No. 1 seed Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa.
Beard was the third Lehigh wrestler into the round of 16, following an 11-1 major decision over Navy's Jacob Koser, his third win over the Midshipman this season. He led 4-1 after one period and secured the bonus point with a late third period takedown and ride out. Beard will next face Zac Braunagel of Illinois, the No. 12 seed.
Sophomore Malyke Hines (141) and first-year Nathan Taylor (285) dropped their opening bouts and will wrestle in the consolations Thursday evening. Hines gave up takedowns late in each of the first two periods and fell 6-1 to the No. 11 seed Clay Carlson of South Dakota State. Taylor dropped a 4-0 decision to the No. 12 seed Colton McKiernan of SIU-Edwardsville. McKiernan rode Taylor out in the second period and added a takedown in the third, plus riding time advantage.
