TULSA, Okla. – Senior Josh Humphreys punched his ticket to Friday night's semifinals with a 5-2 decision over North Dakota State's Jared Franek, highlighting session three of the NCAA Championships for the Mountain Hawks at BOK Center. In the process, Humphreys earned his second career All-America honor and earns Lehigh's 160th all-time medal.
Â
Sophomores Malyke Hines (141) and Michael Beard (197) both won two matches Friday afternoon and will wrestle for All-America honors in the fourth round of consolations Friday night.
Â
Lehigh finishes session three in 11th place with 22.5 team points.
Â
In his quarterfinal bout at 157, Humphreys opened the scoring with a second period takedown and added a reversal to open the third, plus riding time advantage. Humphreys, the No. 5 seed, will next face top seed Austin O'Connor of North Carolina in the semifinals. He will be looking to avenge a one-point loss to O'Connor in last year's blood round.
Â
Hines earned the opportunity to wrestle for a spot on the podium with a pair of bonus point wins Friday afternoon. He began the day with an impressive 18-6 major decision over Ryan Jack of NC State, where piled up the points both early and late. In his next match, he trailed Columbia's Matt Kazimir 2-1 in the second period when he caught the Lion on his back for a defensive fall at 3:56. The pin marked Hines' first win over Kazimir in three tries this season. He will wrestle North Carolina's Lachlan McNeil for All-America honors Friday night.
Â
Beard began his day with a 17-7 major decision over Nick Stemmet of Stanford, and then held off Yonger Bastida of Iowa State 2-1. Bastida had a second period takedown nullified following a Lehigh challenge and gained 1:03 of riding time in the third period which proved to be the difference in the match. Beard's blood round opponent is No. 2 seed Bernie Truax of Cal Poly, who edged Beard 3-2 in December at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals.
Â
Graduate student Tate Samuelson finished one win shy of wrestling in the round of 12 Friday night. Samuelson beat Michigan State's Layne Malczewski 5-1 in the second round of consolations at 184, but dropped a 3-1, sudden-victory heartbreaker to Drexel's Brian Bonino. The EIWA Champion in his lone year with the Mountain Hawks, Samuelson went 22-9 in his graduate season.
Â
First-year heavyweight Nathan Taylor was eliminated Friday afternoon by Harvard's Yaraslau Slavikouski, who avenged an EIWA tournament loss with a 4-2 decision, reversing Taylor in the third period when the Mountain Hawk was working to ride out. Taylor's deferred first season ends at 17-12.
