Three Lehigh Wrestlers Come Up Short Friday Night in Tulsa

3/17/2023 10:56:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

TULSA, Okla. – Lehigh wrestlers engaged in three close bouts Friday night in session four of the NCAA Championships at BOK Center and the Mountain Hawks came up short in all three. Senior Josh Humphreys' bid for a spot in the NCAA finals at 157 came up a point short and sophomores Malyke Hines and Michael Beard were edged in their respective matches in the All-America round of 12.

The Mountain Hawks remain on 22.5 team points after two days of competition and sit in 23rd place.

Humphreys' semifinal against top seed Austin O'Connor of North Carolina ended with the same score and same winner as last year's blood round match won by the Tar Heel, 4-3. This time around it was O'Connor escaping in the second and Humphreys reversing in the third, only to see O'Connor reverse back and gain riding time advantage. A point for stalling to Humphreys in the final seconds made the final score 4-3, with Humphreys suffering his first loss of the season. Humphreys will now wrestle Ed Scott of NC State in the consolation semifinals Saturday morning.

Following two impressive wins Friday morning, Hines dropped a 5-2 decision to North Carolina's Lachlan McNeil in the round of 12 at 141. McNeil scored takedowns in each of the first two periods and while Hines rode McNeil for most of the third, could not muster a turn for the top position that could have provided go-ahead points. Hines' season finishes at 20-13.

Beard was unable to overcome a first period takedown by Truax, who led 2-1 after one period. Beard escaped to open the second period but not before Truax extended his riding time advantage to 1:10. In the third, Truax escaped before Beard could erase the riding time advantage and successfully defended Beard's offensive attempts in the third period. Beard's season ends at 22-5.
