Lehigh's Fourth Quarter Comeback Not Enough in 13-11 Loss to Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team went on a 5-1 run in the fourth quarter but was unable to complete the comeback as the Mountain Hawks fell to Delaware 13-11 at Delaware Stadium on Friday afternoon. Lehigh's starting attack combined for ten goals and four assists with senior Katia Carnevale leading the Mountain Hawks with five goals. 

Junior Olivia Memeger opened up the season on a high note, scoring three goals for the Mountain Hawks. Seniors Gabby Schneider and Emma Eberhardt both finished with one goal and two assists while fellow senior Cassie Marte added two assists and one goal.

Sophomore Lauren Warfield led the defense in caused turnovers, finishing with a career-high of five. Graduate student Jenna Garden added four caused turnovers and tied with Marte for a team-high three groundballs. Marte also finished with five draw controls while junior Emma Fiore added two. 

Delaware scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the first quarter but the Mountain Hawks responded with goals from Eberhardt and Memeger to take the 2-1 with ten minutes left to play. The Blue Hens scored their second goal of the game with less than seven minutes left in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2. 

With both teams tied at two entering the second quarter, Delaware went on a 4-0 run within the first three minutes of the second quarter. With nine minutes remaining in the half, Carnevale scored her first goal of the game to get Lehigh within three. 

The Blue Hens scored two goals within two minutes to take the 8-4 lead with less than five minutes left in the half. Carnevale scored her second goal of the game just under the four minute mark of the second quarter to get the Mountain Hawks within four going into halftime. 

Trailing by four, the Mountain Hawks showed no signs of backing down as Carnevale scored her third goal of the game just 42 seconds into the third quarter. Following Carnevale's third goal of the game, Delaware added three more goals to take the 11-5 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter. With three minutes left in the third, Carnevale scored once again to get Lehigh back within five. 

Delaware opened up the fourth quarter with a goal around the ten minute mark to give the Blue Hens a six-goal lead. With less than eight minutes remaining, Schneider scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Marte. Two minutes later, Memeger added her second goal of the game to get the Mountain Hawks within four. 

The Blue Hens scored their final goal of the game at the three minute mark to take the 13-8 lead but the Mountain Hawks refused to back down. Lehigh scored three goals in less than a minute, to close in on Delaware's five-goal lead. 

With two minutes left to play, Carnevale scored her fifth and final goal of the game off of a pass from Schneider. 40 seconds later, Memeger completed the hat trick to get the Mountain Hawks within two. With a minute left in regulation, Marte scored her first goal of the season and ultimately the final goal of the game. 

Delaware led Lehigh 22-20 in shots while the Mountain Hawks held an 18-14 edge in groundballs. Blue Hens' goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy collected six saves while junior Hayley Hunt finished with five and sophomore Julia DeLitta added one. 

Delaware's Laurel McHale and Riley Gillin led the team with four points each. McHale tallied two goals and two assists while Gillin added four assists for the Blue Hens. Keira Grant and Danielle Livornese led Delaware with three goals each. 

The Mountain Hawks will return to Bethlehem to host Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
