Mountain Hawks Aim to Ride Momentum Against Hofstra

12/2/2023 1:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team is off to one of the best starts in program history this season.  The Mountain Hawks, who are 6-1, will look to continue their momentum when they travel to Long Island to take on Hofstra at 2 p.m.

Sunday's game will also be a homecoming game for Jamie Behar and Remi Sisselman. Sisselman is a native of Melville, N.Y., and Behar is from Oceanside, N.Y.

Lehigh's six wins in seven games marks the most wins to start the season since 2015-16.

If Lehigh were to beat Hofstra, it would mark the third win of the season against a CAA opponent, as the Mountain Hawks have defeated Delaware and Drexel.

Sophomore forward Lily Fandre was the hero in Lehigh's last game against Drexel on Nov. 28. Fandre nailed a free throw with one second remaining to give Lehigh the 58-57 lead and the Dragons, who were out of timeouts, were unable to advance the basketball and get a shot off.

Hofstra comes into Sunday's game with a 4-2 overall record. The Pride most recently defeated Patriot League foe Army 54-43 on Nov. 28.

The Mountain Hawks motto is to share it and shoot it, and that's certainly been showing throughout the season, as there have been four different leading scorers in Lehigh's seven games and eight players recording double figures this season.

Lehigh also has three different players averaging double figures. Ella Stemmer is leading the way with 15.6 points per game, Colleen McQuillen is putting up 10.6 points per game and Fandre is tallying 10.6 points per game.

Stemmer has finished in double figures in the last five games and McQuillen has finished in double figures the last four games.

It's a block party in Bethlehem, as Lehigh is currently 11th in the nation in blocks per game (6.3). Junior forward Meghan O'Brien is 36th in the nation in blocks (13). O'Brien tallied a career-high of three blocks against Drexel.

Hofstra has two players averaging double figures. Sorelle Ineza is leading the way with 13.2 points per game and Emma Van Essen is averaging 12 points per game.

Lehigh and Hofstra have not played since 1996. The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series 12-10.

Sunday's game will be streamed on FloHoops.

Following Lehigh's game against Hofstra, the Mountain Hawks will return home on Thursday at 7 p.m. versus La Salle.
