HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Lehigh women's basketball team continued its phenomenal start to the season with a 68-56 victory versus Hofstra Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Center.
"The focus today was on the details," said head coach Addie Micir. "Once again, we fouled too much in the third quarter, but what I was most proud of was how we responded to that. We wanted to defend without fouling in the fourth, and for seven minutes and 30 seconds, we held them to four points, which was critical. On top of that, when we made our big run, we had players make shots, and we got them from good open looks."
The Mountain Hawks are off to one of the best starts to a season in program history with a 7-1 overall record. Hofstra dropped to 4-3. Three players finished in double figures for Lehigh. Ella Stemmer had 16 points to lead the way, Lily Fandre had 15 and Remi Sisselman had 10 points.
Hofstra scored the opening bucket, but the Long Island native Sisselman responded with a three-pointer of her own. Lehigh started the game by making four straight three-pointers, which led to a timeout by Hofstra.
The Mountain Hawks, who held the lead for 38:24, controlled the pace for the majority of the game.
Lehigh's four three-pointers helped give the Mountain Hawks a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Pride held Lehigh to just one three-pointer in the second quarter, but Lehigh still outscored Hofstra 11-9 to take a 27-21 lead at halftime.
The Mountain Hawks started off the second half on the right foot as Lily Fandre made a three-pointer just nine seconds into the third frame.
Emma Von Essen hit a three-pointer for Hofstra with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter to cut Lehigh's lead to two, but the Mountain Hawks would continue to dominate from there.
Lehigh held a 50-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Mountain Hawks went on a 7-0 run. Colleen McQuillen nailed a three-pointer with 4:23 left in the game to put Lehigh up by 66-46. That would be the largest lead of the game for Lehigh.
Despite the 20-point lead, the Pride outscored Lehigh 10-2 in the final 4:23, but the Mountain Hawks lead would be enough to hold onto the win.
Von Essen had 18 points to lead the way for the Pride.
The Mountain Hawks held a 48-41 advantage on the boards. Meghan O'Brien corralled a team-high of eight rebounds.
Lehigh made 13 three-pointers, which was the most made three-pointers all season.
"That's what we do," Micir said. "And that's what we take a lot of pride in. Heading into halftime, we were upset with how we looked in the second quarter because we're a team of shooters, and we looked reluctant to shoot. I love the way this team responds to a challenge."
The Mountain Hawks ended the game shooting 23-of-61 from the field (37.1%), while also going 13-of-35 from beyond the arc (37.1%).
Hofstra was 20-of-64 from the field (31.3%) and 5-of-21 from distance (23.8%).
The Mountain Hawks return home on Thursday to face La Salle at 7 p.m. at Stabler Arena.
