Lehigh Crowns Seven Champions At Season-Opening Princeton Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Lehigh wrestling team officially opened its season with a large 35-man contingent at the Princeton Open Sunday at Jadwin Gym. Seven Mountain Hawks won individual titles with Lehigh wrestlers going 7-for-7 in finals bouts. In all, 16 of Lehigh's 35 entrants earned top six places in their respective weight classes.

Lehigh's individual champions were first-year Luke Stanich (125), first-year Ryan Crookham (133), junior Malyke Hines (141), junior Max Brignola (157), junior Jake Logan (165), junior Michael Beard (197) and sophomore Nathan Taylor (285). Brignola competed unattached in Sunday's tournament.

Stanich debuted with a 4-0 showing that included a fall and two technical falls. In the finals, Stanich won 11-4 over Joziah Fry of Johnson & Wales, a Division III national champion. Sophomore Sheldon Seymour finished fifth at 125, going 3-1. He rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to Fry by winning three bouts.

Semifinal losers wrestled for third place so consolation bracket winners claimed fifth place at the Princeton Open.

Lehigh's third entrant at 125, first-year Ethan Smith went 2-2 (2-0 officially) and was eliminated by Seymour.

Crookham bonused his way to the title at 133, including major decision victories over nationally-ranked Gable Strickland of Lock Haven and Richie Koehler of Rider.

Hines went 5-0 to claim the title at 141, winning 7-6 over Rutgers' Joey Olivieri in the finals.
Â
Sophomore Carter Bailey placed fifth at 141, going 2-1 officially and 4-1 overall.
Â
Competing unattached, Brignola wrestled six bouts, capped by a 21-8 major decision over Rider's Colton Washleski in the finals.

Junior Luca Frinzi lost to Brignola in the semifinals and went on to finish third at 157.
Â
Senior Nathan Haubert, sophomore Patrick Edmondson and first-year Griffin Gonzalez also competed at 157.

Logan claimed the title at 165 with a 3-2 decision over Army's Dakota Morris. He defeated teammate Hunter Mays 4-1 in the semifinals. Mays, who was competing unattached, finished third at 165 winning his other four bouts he wrestled.

Junior Tyler Sung and first-years Owen Quinn and Zeke Dubler also competed at 165. All three won at least one match with Sung reaching the quarterfinals.

Beard recorded three technical falls and a major decision in his four victories to win the title at 197. He defeated Army's Danny Lawrence 17-1 in just 3:15 in the finals. Junior Caden Wright and first-year Dante Hoose also competed at the weight class.

Taylor went 5-0 with three bonus-point wins to take the heavyweight title. He registered a pair of pins and then won a 19-3 tech fall over Army's Lucas Stoddard in the finals. Juniors TJ Moore and Karam Chakif also competed at 285 with Moore winning three bouts.

Lehigh had five entrants at 149, with first-year Owen Reinsel leading the way with a fourth-place finish. Junior Drew Munch also placed, finishing sixth. First-year Kelvin Griffin was undefeated against non-Lehigh wrestlers, while true first-years Matt Repos and Richie Grungo making their Lehigh debuts. Repos won three bouts.

At 174, the Mountain Hawks had five entrants. Sophomore Thayne Lawrence led the way with two wins. True first-year Jared Schoppe won his first match but medically forfeited his second. Deferred first-years Remy Brancato and Keegan Gagnon and true first-year Justin Onello also competed.

All three Lehigh entrants at 184 earned top six places. First-year Caden Rogers won 2-1 over sophomore teammate JT Davis in the third place bout after both wrestlers dropped semifinal bouts. Sophomore Jack Wilt wrestled back for fifth place.

The Mountain Hawks will send a contingent to the Journeymen Collegiate Classic next Sunday, Nov. 12 at nearby Freedom High School.
