Lehigh Kicks Off Season With Annual Brown And White Intrasquad

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh wrestling team kicked off the 2023-24 season with the annual Brown and White Intrasquad Thursday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Fans were treated to 11 bouts with the Mountain Hawks competing publicly for the first time this season. Unofficially, the Brown team came away with a 28-14 victory.

Five of the 11 bouts on the evening produced bonus point victories, while seven of Lehigh's newcomers competed in Grace Hall in the Brown and White for the first time.

The intrasquad began at 141 where junior Malyke Hines met sophomore Carter Bailey, who bumped up two weight classes from a season ago. Hines used a first period takedown (now worth three points in college), plus a third period escape and riding time to claim a 5-2 decision.

Both bouts at 149 were won by members of the White team by 4-1 scores. First up, it was true first-year Matt Repos defeating deferred first-year Kelvin Griffin. Repos rode out the second period to gain riding time advantage and then scored a takedown in the third.

Junior Drew Munch then broke a 1-1 tie with a third period takedown to knock off first-year Richie Grungo 4-1.

The first bonus points of the night came at 157 where junior Max Brignola claimed a 14-4 major decision over first-year Griffin Gonzalez. Brignola totaled four takedowns, including two in the third period in his victory.

In the first of two bouts at 165, sophomore transfer Hunter Mays won the takedown battle 3-0 in a 10-4 decision over junior Jake Logan. Junior Tyler Sung then delivered the only pin of the evening with a second period pin of first-year Liam Gil-Swiger. Sung led 7-1 before locking up a cradle and securing the fall at 3:40.

Sophomore Thayne Lawrence picked up a 12-0 major decision over first-year Justin Onello on the first of two bouts at 174. Lawrence scored takedowns in the first and third periods, added a four-point near fall in the second, and accumulated more than four-and-a-half minutes of riding time.

In the second bout at 174, first-year Jared Schoppe rode out the second period and added an escape and takedown in the third to defeat deferred first-year Remy Brancato 5-0.

The tightest bout of the night came at 184 where first-year Caden Rodgers edged sophomore JT Davis 2-2 in the tiebreakers behind four seconds of riding time advantage. Rogers and Davis traded escapes in regulation and then in the tiebreaker period, but Rogers got out in six seconds and was able to ride long enough to get riding time advantage on his side.

The final two bouts were both technical fall victories for returning NCAA qualifiers by identical 19-4 scores. At 197, junior Michael Beard defeated Jack Wilt, earning the stoppage with 1:16 remaining in the third period. Sophomore heavyweight Nathan Taylor scored five first period takedowns and then used a four-point near fall to end his bout with junior TJ Moore in the second period.

The Mountain Hawks will kick off the 2023-24 campaign with a pair of tournament appearances. Lehigh will send a contingent to the Nov. 5 Princeton Open in New Jersey and the round-robin Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Nov. 12 at Freedom High School in Bethlehem. The dual season begins on Sunday Nov. 19 when Lehigh hosts Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. Tickets to all Lehigh home duals can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.

The 2023-24 Lehigh wrestling season is presented by the Historic Hotel Bethlehem.
