BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh wrestling team continues preparations for the 2023-24 season, the Mountain Hawks will showcase their progress in a public setting as Lehigh hosts the annual Brown and White Intrasquad Thursday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Â
Head coach Pat Santoro and his staff have tentatively lined up 12 bouts as fans will get their first look at the 2023-24 squad. Thursday's intrasquad matches will showcase some of Lehigh's early-season progress. The Mountain Hawks will open the 2023-24 season at the Nov. 5 Princeton Open and will then compete at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic Nov. 12 at nearby Freedom High School, before kicking off the dual meet season Nov. 19 at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall against Pitt.
Â
"It has been a good preseason," head coach Pat Santoro said. "The guys are excited about getting the season going. The intrasquad is a good way for the guys to get their weight down and a trial run to see how they feel and getting ready to compete over these next three weekends."
Â
Among those slated to compete Thursday include six previous NCAA qualifiers and eight newcomers. Two bouts are currently scheduled at 149, 157, 165 and 174, while there are currently no bouts scheduled at the two lowest weights.
Â
At 141, junior Malyke Hines will face sophomore Carter Bailey, who jumps two weight classes after serving as Lehigh's starter and EIWA Championships representative at 125 last season.
Â
The first of two bouts at 149 match deferred first-year Kelvin Griffin against true first-year Matt Repos. The second pits another true first-year, Richie Grungo, against junior Drew Munch.
Â
A couple of previous NCAA qualifiers will meet in the first bout at 157 as junior Max Brignola moves up to face Luca Frinzi, who drops back down after competing at 165 last season. Sophomore Patrick Edmondson will face first-year Griffin Gonzalez in the second match at 157.
Â
Junior Jake Logan spent the last three seasons at 174 and now drops to 165 where he will take on sophomore Hunter Mays, who spent the 2022-23 campaign at Rider. A couple of true first-years will meet in the second bout at 165 as Zeke Dubler meets Liam Gil-Swiger.
Â
There will also be two bouts at 174, with sophomore Thayne Lawrence facing first-year Justin Onello in the first bout, and true first-year Jared Schoppe meeting deferred first-year Remy Brancato in the second.
Â
At 184 deferred first-year Caden Rogers makes his Grace Hall debut against sophomore JT Davis, who is also coming off a deferred year.
Â
Sophomore Jack Wilt will face junior Michael Beard at 197, while the final bout of the night will match sophomore Nathan Taylor and junior TJ Moore at 285.
Â
"We'll have a lot of new faces wrestling and that's always a good thing," Santoro said. "Most of these matches aren't true wrestle-offs per se, but they're good opportunities to go out and wrestle in Grace Hall in front of the home fans. We're going to use the first couple of tournaments to dictate how our guys are doing and who is going to be in the lineup moving forward."
