BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Graduate student Ryelle Shuey netted the game-winner in the 86th minute to lift Lehigh past league-leader Loyola on Saturday afternoon at Ulrich Sports Complex.
Â
"Another great result for us," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "Loyola is a talented team and I thought we navigated the waves of pressure with composure and executed to get a goal when it was most critical. Emma Roesing delivered a quality service to Rye who had a brilliant finish."
Â
The opening 45 minutes was an even battle between the two teams, with both Lehigh and Loyola recording four shots apiece. The best-look on goal occurred on a Loyola free-kick in the 41st minute. The Greyhounds' Baylee DeSmit put a free-kick towards goal and hit the post.
Â
Loyola controlled possession in the second half, recording nine shots to Lehigh's two. In the 60th minute, DeSmit fired the ball and sophomore Maggie Ousoujoglou made a huge save for Lehigh to keep the match scoreless.
Â
At 85:09, the Mountain Hawks were awarded a free-kick inside their attacking half. Senior Emma Roesing launched the ball into the box, connecting with Shuey's head to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead with under five minutes remaining.Â
Â
Loyola tried to facilitate last-ditch efforts, but the Mountain Hawks held on to secure the 1-0 win.
Â
Ousouljoglou played 68 minutes in net, recording three saves. First-year R'Reeyah Mabry-Francis made her collegiate debut, recording two saves. Loyola goalkeeper Paige Sim recorded one save.
Â
"I also want to recognize R'Reeyah who stepped in goal to finish the game and preserved a shutout. Maggie was incredibly clutch today, too," said Calabrese.
Â
The Mountain Hawks sit in fifth place in the league, slotted behind Bucknell.
Â
Lehigh (7-4-4, 4-3-1 PL) closes out the regular season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against Bucknell at the Ulrich Sports Complex.Â
