Lehigh Hosts Georgetown On Tackle Cancer Day, Presented by Red Robin in Partnership With LLS

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time in a month the Mountain Hawks return to Goodman Stadium as Lehigh welcomes Georgetown Saturday on Tackle Cancer Day, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Lehigh will look to snap a four-game slide as it begins a stretch that features three of its final five games at home. The Mountain Hawks enjoyed their best offensive output of the season last week at Fordham but let a 35-24 fourth quarter lead get away as the Rams scored the final 14 points of the game including a 45-yard Brandon Peskin field goal as time expired. Sophomore quarterback Brayten Silbor had a hand in all five touchdowns to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks. Georgetown won its league opener against Fordham on Sept. 30 and is looking to bounce back from an overtime loss at Penn last weekend.

First-year running back Luke Yoder was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday becoming the first Lehigh player to win a league weekly award this season. Yoder rushed for a career-high 103 yards on 14 carries at Fordham, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Yoder broke off a 51-yard run down the right sideline, Lehigh's longest run of the season, which led to a one-yard Brayten Silbor touchdown run that gave Lehigh a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. He leads Lehigh with 202 rushing yards this season and is averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Yoder scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard run against Cornell.

Lehigh's offense showed signs of progress at Fordham as the Mountain Hawks established season highs with 35 points and 390 yards of total offense. The Mountain Hawks also had their three longest plays from scrimmage this season in the Fordham game: Brayten Silbor's 52-yard touchdown pass to Dylan McFadden, a 51-yard rush by Luke Yoder, and a 55-yard completion by Silbor to Mason Humphrey. The three 50-plus yard plays marked the first time in more than 10 years that Lehigh had three plays of 50 or more yards in a game. On Sept. 7, 2013, Brandon Bialkowski hit Josh Parris for 57 yards and Lee Kurfis for 62 and 77 yards in a 51-44 double overtime win over Central Connecticut State.

One of Lehigh's strengths over the last two seasons has been its ability to get to opposing quarterbacks. The Mountain Hawks tallied 25 sacks in 2021 to rank second in the Patriot League and once again ranked second in the league last season with 23 sacks. Lehigh registered a sack in nine of 11 games in 2022, with a high of five against Princeton. The Mountain Hawks return 74 percent (17-of-23) of their sack output from last season. Linebacker Mike DeNucci led the way with 8.5, while seniors Sam Sheridan (2.0) and Trevor Harris (1.5) both registered more than one sack last season. Lehigh ranks second in the Patriot League with 11 sacks through six games. Those sacks have come from nine different players. Sophomore Matt Spatny leads the team with three, while sophomore T.J. Burke and first-years Andrew Sharga and William Parton registered Lehigh's three sacks at Fordham.

Georgetown brings a 3-3 record into its second league game. The Hoyas won their Patriot League opener 28-24 over Fordham, scoring a touchdown in the final minute to take the lead for good. Last week, Georgetown fell 42-39 in overtime at Penn. Patrick Ryan booted a 49-yard field goal in overtime only to see Malachi Hosley win the game for the Quakers on a six-yard run. Running back Joshua Stakely totaled three touchdowns last week and has eight for the season. Quarterback Tyler Knoop has thrown 12 touchdown passes to only five interceptions. Georgetown leads the Patriot League in both total defense and passing defense. Linebacker David Ealey III has a team-best 35 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss. The Hoyas are minus-2 in turnover margin for the season.

Lehigh and Georgetown meet for the 28th time with the Mountain Hawks leading the series 21-6.  Georgetown's double-overtime win in 2018 snapped a 17-game Lehigh winning streak in the series. The Brown and White met the Hoyas for the first time in 1901 and the teams did not meet between 1926 and 2001. Lehigh is 20-1 overall against Georgetown, including a 10-0 mark at Goodman Stadium since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001.

Lehigh is 20-1 against Georgetown since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001, and the Mountain Hawks have outscored the Hoyas by an average of 35-14 in those games. The Mountain Hawks are 10-0 against Georgetown at Goodman Stadium. The Hoyas' lone win in the series since 2001 came in double overtime at Cooper Field in 2018. Lehigh won 17 straight games over Georgetown from 2001-2017 and had three shutouts during that streak, with all three games played at Goodman Stadium (2002, 2007, 2009).

Saturday's game kicks off just after noon from Goodman Stadium. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.

The Mountain Hawks head back to the road of their final game before the Oct. 28 bye as Lehigh visits Bucknell next Saturday. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to win in Lewisburg for the second straight time and avenge a 19-17 loss to the Bison last season at Goodman Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
