Mountain Hawks Drop Season Opener vs. Monmouth, 3-0
8/19/2022 10:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Monmouth opened the scoring in the 14th minute then added two late insurance goals to beat Lehigh women's soccer, 3-0 on Friday evening in the season opener for both sides. The Mountain Hawks finished the game with six shots, all in the second half, including a shot from distance from first-year Sophia Lis in the 67th minute that hit the crossbar, followed by the goalkeeper, followed by the post, but somehow didn't cross the line.
Friday marked the first game as head coach for Lauren Calabrese.
"Monmouth is a really strong opponent, plays a really great brand of soccer and there were no surprises of what they brought," she said. "There are definitely some moments that we're going to go back and look at on film. Early on in the season, it's an opportunity to figure out our identity and how we want to play. There were flashes of really great moments, so how do we put a complete game together? For us, that comes down to consistency of our work rate and playing as a team."
Monmouth opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Olivia Ramiz made a long run from beyond midfield all the way to goal, finishing to put her team up 1-0.
The Hawks followed with their fifth and sixth shots of the half in the 15th and 19th minutes. Those marked the final shots for either side in the first half.
Monmouth quickly tested first-year goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou, who entered in the second half, in the 49th minute. Ousouljoglou stood tall, then went on to make two more strong saves in the 58th and 60th minutes.
Final shots were 13-6 in favor of Monmouth while the Hawks held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Abby Trainor made one first-half save, while Ousouljoglou tallied three in the second.
The Mountain Hawks return to the field next Thursday when they host Drexel at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
"We're going to do some recovery. The team's going to have a day off and then we're going to get back after it," said Calabrese. "Jump right back into a training session on Monday and really just work on some key principles, key moments of play that are important to us."
