Lehigh claims Game 1, Navy takes Game 2 in doubleheader split

4/2/2022 7:59:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team scored 10 runs in the final three innings to get a come-from-behind 10-4 victory in the opening contest against Navy Saturday afternoon at J. David Walker Field, before falling 9-3 in the nightcap to close out the day. The Mountain Hawks (14-12, 2-4 PL) snapped their four-game losing streak with the Game 1 victory and look to end the weekend on a high note Sunday afternoon vs. Bucknell.

In the two-game span, Chase Carlson led the Lehigh offense going 4-for-7 (.571) from the plate with a double and an RBI, while Tyler Young went 3-for-6 (.500) with a double, a walk and three RBIs. Adam Retzbach, Andrew Nole, Joe Gorla and Casey Rother (in addition to Young) each picked up a trio of base hits.

Senior left-hander Luke Rettig (6-1, 1.11 ERA) entered Sunday's game with 21 straight innings without an earned run surrendered, but gave up four (including three in the first two innings) against Bucknell. He settled in for the final four innings, striking out five with three walks and nine hits, earning his Patriot League-best sixth victory of the 2022 season.

The Midshipmen opened the first game with a 3-0 lead after two innings, courtesy of a two-run single in the first and an RBI single to right center in the second.

Lehigh scored three in the fourth inning by way of Joe Gorla's two-run shot to right field, making his first appearance back in the lineup due to injury suffered in the preseason. Gorla's two run homer, which scored Retzbach, brought the Mountain Hawks within one run at 3-2. In the same inning, Chase Carlson singled through the left side to bring in Young to tie the game at 3-3.

Retzbach got Lehigh to tack on two more runs in the fifth inning via his two-run knock up the middle to bring home Rother and Riley Davis, making it a 5-3 game. Andrew Nole singled through the left side, scoring two more to take a 7-3 lead, completing the four-run frame.

Navy got a run back in the sixth inning but three more runs in the sixth for Lehigh acted as insurance to take a 10-4 lead after an RBI single for Rother and two-run double down the right field line from Young, scoring both Gorla and Rother.

Senior right-hander Nick Pave threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with a walk to earn his second save of the season.

In Game 2, Navy started off the game similarly to the way it started the first, scoring four runs in the top of the second off starter Ben Christian.

The Mountain Hawks got two runs back in the second following Gorla's RBI double to left center and Young's RBI single up the middle to bring home Gorla, cutting the Mids' lead in half, 4-2. Navy scored three more runs in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead and one more in the fifth to go up ahead, 8-2.

Rother singled to left field to score Carlson in the fifth, cutting the gap to 8-3 before Navy scored another in the sixth inning to make it 9-3.

After Ben Christian gave up seven runs, four earned with nine hits and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work, the relief combination of Tyler Thompson and Ryan Deom limited damage, allowing just two runs on eight hits between the two of them in 6.1 innings of work. Deom was excellent, allowing two hits and zero runs over three innings of work, striking out three batters.

Retzbach, Gorla, Young and Carlson each tallied a pair of hits in the Game 2 defeat.

Davis increased his reached base streak to 22 straight games after doubling and walking in Game 1 and getting hit by a pitch in Game 2. Gorla increased his reached base streak to 10 straight games after finishing the 2021 campaign on an eight-game streak.

Sunday's doubleheader with Bucknell at Walker Field begins at noon with a seven-inning game, followed closely by a nine-inning contest shortly after. The Bison split its series with Lafayette on Saturday, winning the first, 6-1 and dropping the second, 3-1 in Easton.
