Penn Hands 14th-ranked Mountain Hawks First Home Loss of Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 14 Lehigh suffered its first home loss of the season Friday night as Penn came into Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall and defeated the Mountain Hawks 24-7. The visiting Quakers won eight bouts, with Lehigh coming up on the short end of a number of close bouts. Penn's eight wins came by a combined 18 points. Senior Jordan Wood and junior Josh Humphreys came up with the Lehigh victories as the Mountain Hawks fall to 8-6 on the dual season and suffer their first loss against EIWA opposition (4-1).

"They attacked more and they won more," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We got the first takedown a lot but then we shut down, trying to find a way to win instead of staying to the game plan and trying to score. They completely outwrestled us and that's tough to swallow. They wrestled well and we didn't and you can't do that in these big matches. We knew every match would be contested and just about every match was. They just probably wanted it a little bit more tonight."

After Lehigh fell behind 12-0, Wood put the Mountain Hawks on the board heading into intermission with the only bonus point win of the night for either side, an 11-3 major decision over Ben Goldin at 285. Wood totaled four takedowns, including three in the second period on the way to his 15th win of the season and 88th career victory.

Humphreys ended the dual on a high note for the Mountain Hawks, defeating Doug Zapf 4-0 in a battle of top 20 men at 157. Humphreys broke a scoreless deadlock with an escape, takedown and rideout in the final period to avenge his only loss of the season.

Friday's dual feature four rematches from the Nov. 14 Journeymen Collegiate Classic. In all four matches, the wrestler who lost in November successfully avenged that loss.

One of those bouts was the opener at 165 where Lucas Revano avenged a tiebreaker loss to Brian Meyer by winning in the tiebreakers on six seconds of riding time advantage. Meyer opened the scoring in the first period and Revano picked up a takedown in the third to send the match to overtime tied at 4-4. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Meyer escaped in six seconds in the first half of the tiebreaker. Revano chose neutral for his half of the tiebreaker and picked up the tying point on a stalling call against Meyer. The six seconds of riding time were the difference as Penn took a 3-0 lead.

Penn's Nick Incontrera defeated Jake Logan 10-5 at 174 to make it 6-0 in favor of the Quakers and then Neil Antrassian avenged an earlier loss to sophomore AJ Burkhart at 184 with a 9-6 decision at 184. Burkhart was ahead on riding time late in the third period when Antrassian scored the winning takedown and added two back points on a desperation reversal attempt.

A 3-1 decision by Cole Urbas over JT Davis at 197 put Penn up 12-0.

Coming out of intermission, Penn's Ryan Miller avenged a loss by fall to junior Jaret Lane with a 5-0 win at 125. Miller broke a scoreless tie with a takedown in the second period and rode out the third, adding a pair of penalty points to extend the Quakers' lead.

Penn found ways to win one-point decisions in the next three bouts to build a 24-4 advantage after nine.

At 133, Michael Colaiocco edged Malyke Hines 7-6 with the deciding point coming on riding time. Hines scored the first takedown, but an injury timeout allowed Colaiocco to score an extra escape and lead 4-2 after one. Riding time advantage gained after his late first period takedown and second period reversal provided the deciding point for the Quaker.

First-year Connor McGonagle dropped a 5-4 decision to Penn's highest-ranked wrestler CJ Composto, who won the takedown battle 2-1 including the third period score that broke a 3-3 tie.

True first-year Max Brignola made his dual meet debut at 149 and took on Penn's Anthony Artalona. The Quaker scored the first takedown to lead 2-1 after one. Brignola came to life in the third, reversing Artalona to tie the match at 3-3. Artalona went ahead on an escape and a late takedown by Brignola was ruled to have come just after time expired as the Quaker held on for a 4-3 decision.

"Max was right there down to the last second," Santoro said. "He's going to be really good. He's going to keep moving forward and wearing people out. We need our whole team to be moving forward and wearing people out and I don't think we did that tonight."
