Mountain Hawks Return From Layoff With Weekend Duals Versus Penn, Army West Point

2/3/2022 2:16:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a weekend off from competition, No. 14 Lehigh returns to action with a pair of duals against EIWA opponents. The Mountain Hawks will host Penn Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, before traveling to West Point, N.Y. on Sunday to face Army. In its last action, Lehigh saw its four dual winning streak come to an end with a 26-9 loss at Oklahoma State on Jan. 23. Josh Humphreys, Brian Meyer and Jordan Wood all picked up victories for the Mountain Hawks against the Cowboys. Lehigh will close out the dual season with five matches in February. Penn visits with nine top 33 wrestlers and having won three duals over the last two weekends, while Army West Point picked up its first win last weekend after a daunting early season schedule.

Spectator Policy: Announced Jan. 12 and remaining in effect, Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall will operate at 67% capacity. Tickets will continue to be sold in advance at LehighTickets.com and on event days up to 67% capacity. Tickets remain available for Friday's Penn match.

COVID-19 Protocols: Per University policy, masks continue to be required indoors in public spaces at Lehigh for both unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals.   Masking will be enforced for all spectators at both matches this weekend. Failure to comply may result in removal from Grace Hall, and may result in all spectators not being permitted at future matches this season. Sections 103 (for 100-level ticket holders) and 203 & 207 (for 200-level ticket holders) will be physically-distanced sections for spectators who desire this. Ask an usher for assistance with this.

No. 15 Lehigh saw its four match winning streak to open 2022 come to an end Nov. 23 with a 26-9 loss at No. 4 Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena. A Cowboy team that featured nine nationally-ranked wrestlers saw those grapplers go 7-2 on the day as Oklahoma State raced to a 15-0 lead and never looked back. Junior Josh Humphreys (157), sophomore Brian Meyer (165) and senior Jordan Wood (285) picked up wins for the Mountain Hawks, with Humphreys and Wood defeating top 33-ranked Cowboy opponents.

Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings by FloWrestling, while five appear in the latest rankings by InterMat and The Open Mat. The Mountain Hawks also have four wrestlers ranked by Amateur Wrestling News. Senior Jordan Wood leads the way as he is ranked in the top seven by all four outlets. Juniors Josh Humphreys and Jaret Lane and first year Malyke Hines are also ranked by all four outlets, with Humphreys rated in the top 10 by all four. Sophomore Brian Meyer (165) and first year Manzona Bryant IV (149) are both ranked by two outlets. Connor McGonagle is ranked solely by FloWrestling at 141.

The NCAA released the first coaches' rankings on Jan. 21, with nine Mountain Hawks appearing in the top 33 of their respective weight classes. The rankings are one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. To be eligible for the rankings, a wrestler needed to be designated as a starter and must have five Division I matches in the weight class including at least one within the last 30 days. Senior Jordan Wood led the way for the Mountain Hawks coming in at No. 7 at 285, followed by junior Josh Humphreys, who is No. 10 at 157. The second coaches' ranking and the first release of the RPI are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 10.

Penn brings a 3-1 dual record into Friday night's dual. The Quakers' lone fall semester dual was a home loss to Penn State, but Penn has opened 2022 with three consecutive wins over Columbia, Brown and Harvard. Penn hosted and won the eight team Keystone Classic on Nov. 21 and took second at the Illinois Matmen Open in late December. The Quakers, like Lehigh, were at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in November. Nine Quakers appear in the top 33 individual rankings from InterMat, led by CJ Composto at 141. Michael Colaiocco (133) is also in the top 20. All nine ranked Quakers appear between 16-32 in their respective weight classes. Roger Reina is in his 23rd season leading the Quakers overall and the fourth season of this,  his second stint.

Lehigh and Penn will meet for the 60th time and the 25th time in 26 seasons after not having wrestled during the dual season between 1956 and 1996. The Mountain Hawks have won the last seven duals against the Quakers. The only break in the series over the last 26 seasons was 2021 when the Ivy League did not participate in intercollegiate athletics. Pat Santoro is 11-1 all-time against the Quakers as Lehigh's head coach.

Army West Point brings a 1-6 dual record into Sunday's match. The Black Knights dropped their first six duals, all to nationally-ranked opposition before defeating Bucknell last weekend for their first victory. Army opened its season at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Nov. 14 and was slated to compete at the Midlands Championships, before the cancellation of that event. Four Black Knights appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by P.J. Ogunsanya, who is 19th at 149. Ben Pasiuk (174) also won an EIWA title last season, while JT Brown (197) lost in the finals to Lehigh's Jake Jakobsen. Kevin Ward is in his eighth season as Army's head coach.

Army is Lehigh's fifth most-often wrestled opponent, trailing only Penn State, Navy, Cornell and Syracuse. Sunday's dual will be the 70th in the series, with Lehigh leading 57-9-3. Lehigh is 20-1-1 in its last 22 duals with Army, with the Black Knights' lone win coming at West Point in 2008. Lehigh and Army are meeting for the sixth consecutive season following a break in the series from 2010 through 2017.

The Penn dual gets underway Friday at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.

Sunday's match at Army is set for a 2 p.m. start for Christl Arena at West Point, N.Y. The match will be streamed at GoArmyWestPoint.com/watch with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM in Easton beginning at 1:45.

Lehigh will close out its home schedule with two EIWA duals next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will host Princeton on Friday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. before hosting Bucknell on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Lehigh will look to snap a two-dual losing streak to the Tigers on Friday and will honor its eight member senior class prior to the Bucknell match on Saturday. The dual season concludes with a Feb. 19 match at Arizona State.
