WEST POINT, N.Y. – No. 14 Lehigh led Army West Point 13-9 after seven bouts, but a quick fall sparked the host Black Knights, who won the final three bouts to rally past the Mountain Hawks 24-13 Sunday at Christl Arena. On a day where Army celebrated its senior class, it was Black Knight senior Corey Shie who hit the biggest move of the day, taking Connor McGonagle to his back with a headlock and getting the go-ahead fall just 51 seconds into the bout.
Â
Army West Point picked up a decision at 149 and then a second fall to close out the dual to hand Lehigh its second straight defeat. The Mountain Hawks also saw their six dual winning streak over the Black Knights come to an end.
Â
Lehigh is now 8-6 in duals while Army improves to 2-6.
Â
"Army was a better team today," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We had opportunities, but we didn't capitalize enough. We just have to start wrestling a lot better. A month ago we were on fire and now we're not. It's tough to swallow because we just aren't that team right now."
Â
The dual began at 165 where sophomore Brian Meyer got the Mountain Hawks started with a victory. Meyer rode Dalton Harkins for the first 1:56 of the second period, which proved to be the difference in a 2-1 decision.
Â
Army responded with three straight close decisions to take a 9-3 lead.
Â
At 174, Jake Logan had the only takedown of his bout with Ben Pasiuk, but two escapes and a pair of stalling points shifted the decision in Army's favor 4-3.
Â
Sophomore AJ Burkhart then dropped a 5-1 decision to Sahm Abdulrazzaq at 184 with the Black Knight scoring takedowns in the second and then late in the third period.
Â
Army's JT Brown capped the Black Knight run with a 5-2 win over JT Davis at 197. Brown rode out the second period which was valuable after Davis scored the bouts first takedown in the third period. Leading 3-2 on riding time, Brown added a late takedown to cap Army's third straight win.
Â
Lehigh followed Army's three-match run with three straight wins of its own. Senior heavyweight Jordan Wood brought the Mountain Hawks within 9-6 halfway after a 6-0 decision over Brandon Phillips. Wood scored takedowns in each of the final two periods for his 16th victory of the season.
Â
With junior Jaret Lane sidelined Sunday, first-year Sheldon Seymour stepped in at 125 and delivered Lehigh's lone bonus point win of the day, a 14-4 major decision over Ryan Chauvin. Seymour led 6-1 after one behind two takedowns and a two point near fall and never looked back on the way to his first dual win of the season.
Â
"Sheldon was a buzz saw," Santoro said. "We knew he'd go out and look for bonus points. We knew bonus points would be big and he went out for the team and got it. He was looking to score from the first whistle to the last whistle. That's what you ask for from your team, to go out and try and score points the whole time."
Â
A 4-0 decision by Malyke Hines over Dominic Carone at 133 put Lehigh up 13-9 with three to go, but Shie quickly shifted momentum back to the home team with his go-ahead fall.
Â
"It deflated the team for sure," Santoro said. "We knew Shie has a great arm spin and a great headlock and unfortunately for us he hit the headlock. That's his position. He won it and it turned the dual in their favor."
Â
A second period takedown was the difference at 149 as Matt Williams edged first-year Max Brignola 3-2.
Â
Junior Josh Humphreys was also out of the lineup Sunday and Army's Markus Hartman closed the dual with a second period pin over Luca Frinzi at 157.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are back home for their final two home duals next weekend as Lehigh hosts Princeton Friday at 7 p.m. and Bucknell Saturday at 2 p.m. with both duals being hosted inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
