No. 23 Lehigh, No. 19 Princeton Battle To Final Bout; Tigers Prevail 20-16

2/11/2022 10:16:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 23 Lehigh's dual with No. 19 Princeton came down to the final bout but it was the Tigers' Travis Stefanik posting a 15-4 major decision over sophomore AJ Burkhart at 184 to give the visitors a 20-16 win Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

The teams split the 10 bouts 5-5, but the match turned at 133 when Lehigh's Malyke Hines went down with an injury while leading 2-0 in the first period and was unable to continue as the Tigers picked up six points in a bout Lehigh was leading. Princeton also had a 2-1 edge in major decision victories.

The loss drops Lehigh's record to 8-8 while Princeton improves to 6-3. The Tigers have now won three straight duals in the series after Lehigh had won the previous 14.

"We wrestled great tonight, as well as we could," said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. "We out-wrestled them to a man. Everybody fought and brought it, but it was an unfortunate injury and you can't control those things. I'm more concerned about Malyke and the timeline right now."

Princeton and Lehigh alternated wins in the first three bouts with the Tigers' Luke Stout winning 6-3 over JT Davis at 197 in the opener and then senior Jordan Wood putting Lehigh in front 4-3 with a 12-1 major decision over Matt Cover at 285. Wood racked up four takedowns but was unable to turn Cover as the senior picked up career win No. 90.

First-year Sheldon Seymour wrestled tough against second-ranked Pat Glory at 125, as Seymour scored the opening takedown and found himself tied 3-3 after one period. Glory picked up takedowns in the second and third periods, but Seymour fought the full seven minutes and kept the match to a 9-4 decision.

"Sheldon is going to wrestle you for seven minutes, or nine if he needs to," Santoro said. "Whatever he needs to do he's going to do that. He's a great spark plug."

Hines took on Nick Kayal at 133 and scored an early takedown but tweaked his knee while riding and after exhausting his injury time was unable to continue. The six point injury default increased Princeton's lead to 12-4 after four bouts.

Lehigh pulled within 12-7 halfway as Connor McGonagle edged Danny Coles 3-2 at 141. Coles scored the only takedown of the bout in the first period but McGonagle came back with a quick escape and then rode out the second period. An early third period escape plus the riding time point gave McGonagle the victory.

First-year Max Brignola came out of intermission with his first career dual win, scoring a takedown late in the third period to defeat Marshall Keller 3-1.

A 12-3 major decision for Princeton's Quincy Monday over Luca Frinzi extended the Tigers' lead to 16-10 with three bouts remaining.

At 165, sophomore Brian Meyer brought Lehigh back within three with a 5-3 decision over Jake Marsh. Meyer scored takedowns in the first and third periods.

Jake Logan followed Meyer with a 7-0 decision over Nate Dugan at 174 to tie the dual at 16-16 heading into the final bout.

"Brian and Jake were both able to put it together," Santoro said. "We know how good they are and they showed that tonight. I'm disappointed for the team because we did everything we could do, but we need to get everybody back and healthy for the postseason."

With the dual on the line, Stefanik took a 4-1 lead after one and extended the lead to 6-2 after two. Burkhart was within 8-4 in the third but a desperation attempt resulted in a six-point move for Stefanik to secure the major decision and the win for Princeton.

"We've wrestled this way all year with the exception of last weekend," Santoro said. "We don't know why last weekend was so bad, but it's a five-month season and things happen. We showed up tonight and fought for each other. They were trying to win. They really wanted it. I feel bad because we wrestled really well."

The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Saturday to host Bucknell on Senior Day, beginning at 2 p.m. Lehigh's eight member senior class will be recognized prior to the match. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com.
