AU downs Lehigh in first matchup of the week

WASHINGTON – Out-scored 27-16 in the second half, the Lehigh women's basketball team fell to American, 64-45 Tuesday afternoon in the first of two this week at Bender Arena. The Mountain Hawks (18-8, 10-5 PL) led by as many as four points near the beginning of the first quarter and kept close within five points at the end of the first 10 minutes. The loss is Lehigh's second consecutive on the road as the team falls to 5-6 away from home this season.
The Mountain Hawks shot just 30.4 percent (17-for-56) from the field and just 25 percent (5-for-20) from beyond-the-arc in the contest. Sophomore guard Mackenzie Kramer led the way with 12 points with two 3-pointers in the first quarter, but was relatively quiet in the second half, limited to just four points and two 3-point attempts in the final 20 minutes. First year guard Kaylee Van Eps had a strong showing in 18 minutes off the bench, leading the second unit with nine points and seven rebounds.
Lehigh played a pretty even first quarter, going on an 8-4 spurt behind two quick 3-pointers from Kramer. The Eagles fought back to lead by five points (23-18) at the end of the first 10 minutes following a layup off a fast break from Jade Edwards.
The Mountain Hawks cut into the deficit to start the second quarter off a layup from Megan Walker with 9:30 on the clock, trailing by three, while the Eagles took a six-point cushion with 7:38 to go at 28-22. Lehigh fought back with a 7-2 push following two clutch baskets from Emma Grothaus to trail by one, 30-29 with 2:24 left, but AU scored seven straight points to end the half to lead 37-29 heading into the locker room. Lehigh managed to shoot just 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from the field during the second quarter, while the Eagles defense limited the Mountain Hawks to just one 3-point make, going 1-for-3 from beyond-the-arc.
AU scored six straight points to start the half in the first two minutes following three consecutive travel calls by the Mountain Hawks' offense, which caused head coach Sue Troyan to spend a 30-second timeout. The Eagles increased the run to 8-0 following a fast break layup with 7:15 to go, while Walker halted the streak with a layup to make it a 45-31 game. Lehigh was able to get back within 12 points with 4:37 to go following a 3-pointer from Van Eps, but AU ended the quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 54-37 advantage into the final stanza.
Following six straight points from American to open the fourth quarter, ballooning the run to 14-3 with a 60-37 lead, Kramer got the and-one call with a layup with 5:35 to go. That was the Mountain Hawks' first field goal since the 2:52 mark of the third quarter. Van Eps sunk two free throws and another layup with 3:31 to play to cut the gap to 17 points, but the Eagles scored a basket with 2:02 to go to make it a 21-point cushion and Kramer converted on Lehigh's final field goal of the contest with 1:49 to play, as AU held on for the 19-point victory.
Three Eagles finished in double-figures led by Emily Fisher's 12 points, while Jade Edwards had 11 and Maddie Doring finished with 10. Ivy Bales had nine points with eight rebounds. American shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the field and 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from distance, shooting 10-for-11 from the free throw line (90.9 percent).
AU out-rebounded Lehigh, 43-31 while the Mountain Hawks were tied with the Eagles in turnovers (11) as well as second chance points (2-2).
Lehigh wraps up the season series with American Wednesday night at Bender Arena. The tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
