Lehigh to Host Brown and White Intrasquad Friday Night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh wrestling team continues its preparations for the 2022-23 season, the Mountain Hawks will host the Brown and White Intrasquad Friday at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

Head coach Pat Santoro and his staff have tentatively scheduled 10 bouts as fans will get their first look at the 2022-23 Mountain Hawks in a public setting. Friday's intrasquad meet will also mark eight days until Lehigh's Nov. 5 season-opener against Oregon State at Stabler Arena.

Six of Lehigh's returning NCAA qualifiers are expected to compete Friday along with three newcomers and a pair of true first-years. There will be two bouts at both 157 and 184 while there will be no bouts at 133 and 197.

"Our guys are ready for competition," Santoro said. "They want to start wrestling some new people. It has been a good fall. We're going to sit a couple of guys for the intrasquad but we should have them ready for the first couple weeks of the season."

At 125, deferred first-year Carter Bailey will kick off the evening against true first-year Killian Delaney. Sophomore Malyke Hines, 2021 EIWA champion at 133, is moving up to 141 where he will face true first-year Owen Reinsel.

Sophomore Max Brignola will meet sophomore Drew Munch, who moves up from 141, in Friday's lone bout at 149.

The two matches at 157 will match senior Josh Humphreys, a two-time EIWA champion and 2020 All-American, against sophomore Tyler Sung and deferred first-year Zac Martin against sophomore Paul Watkins.

Two-time NCAA qualifier Brian Meyer will face deferred first-year Connor Herceg at 165, followed by a matchup of third-year wrestlers with first-year eligibility at 174 as Sean Kilrain takes on Thayne Lawrence.

The first of two matches at 184 features NCAA qualifiers Tate Samuelson against AJ Burkhart. Samuelson was a four-time NCAA qualifier for Wyoming before coming to Lehigh as a graduate transfer. Burkhart qualified for his first NCAA Championship last year after a third place EIWA finish after moving up three weight classes.

The second bout at 184 matches third-year sophomores JT Davis and Caden Wright. Davis drops down from 197, where he represented the Mountain Hawks at last year's EIWA Championships.

The final bout of the night will feature deferred first-year Nathan Taylor and junior Elijah Jones at 285.

"We're all hoping to see our guys open up," Santoro said. "These guys know each other so well so we just want them to go out and try to score as many points as possible. That's the name of the game – going out and competing and scoring points. We want to see how the guys wrestle in front of a crowd and how they interact under pressure."

For fans unable to attend Friday's event, Lehigh will offer streaming video of the Brown and White Wrestle-offs on Lehigh Athletics' YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3n0biC0KP8

The Mountain Hawks will open the 2022-23 season with two home matches next weekend. Lehigh will host Oregon State at Stabler Arena on Saturday, Nov. 5 at noon and then will welcome Sacred Heart to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets for the Brown and White Intrasquad and all home duals can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours. Tickets for the Brown and White Intrasquad will also be available Friday evening at Grace Hall.
