Lehigh Shows Progress, Potential in Fall Opener at Bucknell

10/1/2022 9:37:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing teams opened their fall seasons Saturday on the Susquehanna River against Bucknell, in the debut competition for new head coach Peter Costas.

The women competed in a five across race against the Bison with even lineups, while the men stacked lineups in a head race format.

"Great day of racing at Bucknell," Costas said. "I came away from the event feeling great about the competitive fire both rosters tapped into."

On the women's side, Costas credited his two coxswains, senior Fatima Mumtaz and sophomore Julia McDougall, for their efforts managing steering in an unfamiliar environment and helping the Mountain Hawks execute their game plan. The success of the coxswains enabled the rowers to race well on Saturday.

"We ran a staggered start to account for a gradual turn on the course," Costas said. "It developed in a way that there were two close contests going on between Lehigh and Bucknell boats for most of the final 2000 meters. Each of our boats finding late gear to put their bow in front was a great way to end it. I was excited to see Mina Petrovic race well in the stern pair with at 7 seat. She's had a great start to her first year and had a steady performance today that mirrored our upperclass rowers."

On the men's side, Lehigh's first varsity posted a time of 19:24.9, second to Bucknell's first varsity (19.20.1). Lehigh's second boat finished fifth with a time of 20:42.2.

"We wanted to err on the aggressive side and they did just that," Costas said. "Bucknell had a great race today. Getting the opportunity to test our speed against the defending MARC champions this early in the year sets us up to understand the work to be done. Really happy with the pieces from both boats. You're always hoping to leave with a win, but today was an indication to me that we're on track.

"Impressed with first-year Will Snider in the 2v today," Costas continued. "He's new to Lehigh and new to the sport of rowing, and has invited the frustrating process of starting this sport from scratch. Glad to see his hard work paying off."

The Mountain Hawks will head back to work and will host the Lehigh Class Day Regatta at the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse on Oct. 29.
