Women's Track and Field Aim For Their 14th Straight Victory Over Lafayette
1/28/2022 9:43:00 AM | Women's Track and Field
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks are well-prepared for one of their most highly-anticipated meets of the year. On Saturday, Lehigh will hos archrival Lafayette at Rauch Fieldhouse in The Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Health Network and Coordinated Health.
"We should never take the Leopards lightly," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We have a number of team goals including continuing the streak of wins against the crosstown rivals. We have a lot to live up to due to the 21 and 16-year win streaks from the men's and women's cross country teams but I fully expect our group to rise to the occasion and show up in historic fashion on Saturday."
The women's track and field team is coming off of dominant performances at the John Covert Classic at Rauch Fieldhouse and the Villanova Invitational at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks finished Saturday with 23 PRs and five top 10 additions, including two school records being broken by first-year Melissa Cunningham.
Lehigh had an explosive performance at Ocean Breeze on Saturday. All eyes were on Cunningham, who showed no signs of nerves in only her third collegiate meet. Cunningham began Saturday by breaking the school record in the prelims of the 60m (7.74). After competing in the finals and placing fifth overall, she moved on to the 200m hoping to earn another PR. The first-year shocked everyone by breaking her second school record in a single day, finishing the 200m with a time of 25.47.
Three other Mountain Hawks received top 10 additions, becoming closer to achieving a school record of their own. First-year Casey Talamini-Kelemen grabbed a third-place finish and a new PR in the triple jump, making her second all-time (11.66m). Seniors Chae Kim and Julia Dorley followed suit, moving up on the all-time list. Kim finished Saturday as No. 8 all-time in the 60m hurdles (9.04) while Dorley is currently No. 9 all-time in the 800m (2:14.00).
At Rauch Fieldhouse, Lehigh's jumps group asserted its dominance early on. Every Mountain Hawk who competed in the long jump finished with a PR. Junior Avery Roze led the way with an eighth-place finish (5.11m), first-year Chelsi Chevannes followed suit with a ninth-place finish (5.07m). First-year Lauren Roy and sophomore Rachel Caldwell-Glixon both PR-ed by significant distance in their 13th and 16th-place performances.
The Mountain Hawks have not competed in a dual meet against Lafayette since January 2020, where they defeated the Leopards in Rauch Fieldhouse 115-66. In all, Lehigh defeated Lafayette 18-9 in the 2020-21 season.
Saturday's meet against Lafayette will begin at 2 p.m. with the women's pole vault, women's weight throw, men's high jump and men's long jump. The women's mile will kick off the track events at 3:30 p.m.
