Mountain Hawks Top Defending MAAC Champion Siena in Home Opener, 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team scored twice in the game's first 25:07, and had a number of glittering scoring chances the rest of the way, as the Mountain Hawks picked up an impressive 2-1 win over defending MAAC Champion Siena in the home opener on Sunday. Lehigh's goals were scored by senior Courtney Supp and sophomore Ava Schaller, while the defense didn't allow a shot on goal until the 61:58 mark to help the Mountain Hawks to their first win of the young season.
"I saw really good energy and a really good attitude by our players to attack, go after them and honestly have a lot of fun," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "Soccer is a great sport to play. It was a beautiful day. It was good to be back home. They really executed the way we wanted to play and got after it."
Siena recorded the first shot, but Lehigh answered with the next six, two of which found the back of the net. First, in the 19th minute, freshman Hope Flanegin fed senior Rebecca Van Siclen, who found Supp on a cross. A Siena defender got a piece, but not enough and Supp did the rest.
Then, less than seven minutes later, senior Erin Keefe connected on a long pass with Schaller. The sophomore got behind the defense and beat Siena goalkeeper Leslie Adams at the 25:07 mark for her second goal in as many games.
There were only three shots the rest of the first half, two by the Saints, as the Mountain Hawks took a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Lehigh continued to attack in the second half, holding an 11-7 edge in shots (including seven on goal). Amongst Adams' seven second-half saves were three in the span of 2:26 between the 75:34 and 78:00 marks.
Siena did get on the board in the 89th minute with a goal from a tough angle, but it wasn't enough as the Mountain Hawks got in the win column.
Final shots were 18-10 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. Making her first-career start, sophomore Violette Bonvallet posted three saves. Adams tallied eight for Siena.
"I think [today] was huge," said Lambinus. "I thought we've played well in really good moments throughout the first two games. We just have to continue as a coaching staff to build our confidence. We're still a young team. We don't have as much experience as we've normally had. If we play with confidence, we play with the right attitude, we play with the right energy, we can do really great things.
"Honestly, that was just fun to watch."
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Thursday when they travel to St. John's to face the Red Storm. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
