Young Repeats as Patriot League Rookie of the Week
5/4/2021 2:13:00 PM | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second consecutive week, Lehigh freshman Katelyn Young has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. The left-handed pitcher threw her second consecutive three-hit shutout as she shut down Holy Cross on Sunday to secure a key doubleheader sweep for the Mountain Hawks.
Young faced just two batters over the minimum Sunday in Lehigh's 5-0 win over Holy Cross. She allowed three singles, walked one batter and struck out six to pick up her sixth victory of the season. Young allowed one out singles in each of the first two innings, but on both occasions started 1-6-3 double plays to end the threats.
For the season, Young is now 6-7 with a 4.14 ERA. She has two shutouts and combined on a third with junior Gabriella Nori earlier this year. Young now has 54 strikeouts in 66 innings of work.
Lehigh freshmen have now won four Rookie of the Week awards this season, with Brooke Cannon winning two and now Young capturing two.
Nori and junior Jaelynn Chesson received honorable mention recognition for their performances against the Crusaders.
In Sunday's opener, Nori struck out a season-high 11 batters and allowed just two unearned runs on two hits in Lehigh's 7-2 victory. Combined, Nori and Young have not allowed an earned run in their last 28 innings of work, as the Mountain Hawks have won four straight games.
Chesson went 4-for-8 in Sunday's twin bill with five RBIs. She went 3-for-4 in game one with an RBI single, an RBI double and her fifth home run of the season, then drove in the first two runs of game two with a sixth inning double. In 26 games, Chesson has 15 doubles and 39 RBIs. She ranks in the top five nationally in both doubles per game and runs batted in per game.
The Mountain Hawks (12-14, 10-8 Patriot League) will close out the regular season with a four-game home-and-home series against rival Lafayette this weekend. Lehigh and Lafayette will play a doubleheader Saturday in Easton, beginning at noon, and then another twin bill Sunday at noon at Leadership Park. All four games are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
Lehigh will be looking to secure a Patriot League Tournament berth as the Mountain Hawks enter the final weekend in third place in the league standings. The Mountain Hawks have two more victories than fourth place Army West Point and hold a three game lead over fifth place Bucknell. The top four teams make the tournament, which will be hosted by Boston University.
